GO Mama!!! Good for you! When people do start coming around, start off with a round of hand sanitizer or a good hand washing. Nothing wrong with that.

My little guy had a rough start too- huge swelling/bruising on his head from delivery and then that lovely jaundice. It wasn't easy, but all came out fine after those first few speed bumps. Amazing how quickly they recover too. Hang in there, you are doing a great job!

Oh gosh. I think all newborn moms are "over"protective, at LEAST the first time around. ESPECIALLY if something like that happened.

People are so strange.
Although, it should put your mind at ease a little that its not cold and flu season, so other than people actually being sick, you can probably ease up a bit on the Purell Police ;) a few germs is good for a healthy baby :)

Sorry but this really makes me laugh.... :)

Sorry you had to go through this but same as Foodnerd81 I also don't understand why are people so obsessed with holding the baby that's not even yours. I will never understand it. And in terms of germophobe, you should have seen us. I told my mom (and husband told his) to do whooping cough shots because that's what the hospital told us to do in those birth classes. Thinking back it was a bit crazy but I do not want my newborn to be sick at all. Life with a newborn is already hard as is, I do not need challenges.

Even before getting pregnant I've never understood people who think their desire to play with someone else's new baby trumps anything that the parents say. Even if you WERE being overprotective, which you aren't, it's your baby! I would do the same thing as you. I'm glad she is getting better and I hope you are feeling on too. If people don't like it they can just wait.

You're not overprotective, you're a mama and that's what mamas do - protect their little ones. You did the right thing. I hope you and baby girl are healing and resting up!

You're not an a-hole or over protective, you're a reasonable, loving mother! It annoys me when people treat my baby (and, it seems, most babies) as playthings with needs & opinions that come secondary to there own!

I totally understand how you feel, my wee girl also had a very traumatic delivery and lost skin off her head when the ventouse cup slipped off, she was a very angry and upset baby for the first couple of weeks.

My midwife advised me to limit physical contact and overstimulation for my LO, particularly as my milk still wasn't in so she was cranky and hungry, and it upset my SIL, but at the end of the day my baby was more important than her feelings!

You're doing awesome so keep on keeping on and forget about what anybody else thinks!

Congratulations on your sweet baby. You are Momma and what you say goes. They need to suck it up and keep their mouths shut. She is your daughter and you have every right to shelter and protect her....she's a newborn! Don't let them get to you! Make DH run family interference.

Yup! You are protecting your little one, and if that is considered over protective, then so be it. It means you are doing your job as a great mama.

I'm so sorry you guys had a rough go of it. You must be pretty sore too.

You are doing great. Don't doubt yourself for a second!

Ignore the selfish people and continue doing what you feel is best for your baby. Mama's rules!!
After becoming a mom I have such huge respect for the wishes of other moms. I hope I don't forget that as I get older.
Congrats again on your baby girl.

Our gorgeous, sweet LO was born 5 days ago. I'll write her birth story soon, but the short version is: water broke 6am, got epidural at 2pm, started pushing at around 8pm, at which point they told me it would be a 'tight fit.' Three hours of pushing, position adjustments, and forceps later, I ended up with a C-section and she was born at 11:47pm.

SO. She had a really, really rough time of it. All the manhandling and forceps left her with a hugely swollen head, scratches everywhere on her scalp, and obviously, a huge headache. Poor thing would scream her head off if anyone went near it, understandably. It really was horrifying looking. She also developed jaundice and was on light treatments for 2 days.

Because of her poor head, DH and I decided it would be best if no one held her for a couple days. People did not take this well. My mom pouted and then tried to argue with me, and then left early to go back to her house when I wouldn't budge. My dad and his wife told me I was being overprotective until the next day when they actually *looked* at her head, and then they were very upset and understanding. *eyeroll*

Apparently my MIL was pissed too, because when DH talked to her earlier today, she said "if I come down, will you even let me in the door? Will you let me hold her AT ALL?"

UGGHH!! Way to make me feel like an a-hole for protecting my child, people. On top of it, after DH told her I wasn't letting my sister visit until she got over a sinus infection, she said "why don't you get everyone gloves and a mask if you are such germ-a-phobes." OMG lady, I don't want my kid around sick people. Everyone else just wash your dang hands.

The whole thing pissed me off. LO is doing so much better, her jaundice is nearly cleared and her head is back to a normal lovely size and healing well. I just don't understand why people thought their needs to hold my baby outweighed LO's need to freaking heal!!

:(
