@pui: You know, there are lists that identify people who can't own guns . . . There should also be a list to identify people who shouldn't ever be allowed to own a pet! You should use his own training method on him . . . every time he effs up, you should hit him as hard as you can. Fucking asshat *ptooey*

@Mrs. Confetti: My advice would be to recreate the noises/events that make your dog bark, but start small, like very lightly tapping on the floor near the door. When she doesn't bark, give her a treat. After that is established, slowly work up to knocking on the door, then making noises in the hall, ect. The trick is to set her up for success, so don't progress too fast. If she barks, then go a step back. This can be done in 5 minute sessions every day for a few weeks.

I suggest checking out Kikopup on YouTube. She's great!

@pui: I would love any advice for the training you are doing with your dog. Ours never barked much til LO was born and now she goes nuts every time she hears someone come in or out of our multi-unit building. We basically yell at her to stop (which she doesn't) and wait for her to just get over it. It isn't working (duh). Any advice would be appreciated :)

What a sad idea. I am glad you're taking the high road. Dogs are crazy smart and he will have it figured out in no time.

This hurts my heart :(
DH's coworker is the same way - they're using the shock collar and have used it SO much, that their dog doesn't even flinch. That kind of stuff just makes me so sad :'(

@pui: That statement irks me. You should "beat" nothing. All beating an animal teaches it is to be afraid. Your dog is adorable!

@sslm: It seems to be a long-standing myth that you need to physically punish dogs for them to learn. Dogs are smart and positive reinforcement of the behaviours you like works!!

Ugh a coworker of mine is trying to convince me that I need to beat my dog in order to train him.

Our 8 month year old pup has just recently started barking at clients (like literally it started yesterday) when they come through the door. We want to continue bringing him to work with us, so I have started training him not to do this. I've started by clicking him and giving him treats when he doesn't bark at myself/my coworkers when I/they come through the door (which he already doesn't do, so I'm setting him up for success) and I'm going to work my way up to him getting used to other people coming through the door.

Well my coworker (who technically works for me, by the way) laughed in my face when he saw me practicing this with my pup. He seems to think that this method is never going to work. If I want to train my pup not to bark at clients I'd need smack him (my 8 pound puppy) as hard as I can every time he barks. Uh. what?

I've owned dogs my whole life, thank you very much. My last pup NEVER barked at the door, how do you suppose I trained him? This exact way.
