@LindsayInNY: I was definitely disappointed with things down there post-delivery. It just doesn't seem the same. I had an episiotomy, but I think the state of things has more to do with what @blackbird: said

@LindsayInNY: I haven't really looked but I had an episiotomy and they were stitching for a long time... anyway it took me at least 3 months to feel somewhat back to normal. Give yourself time!

@Peasinapod: I think the cosmetic ones are when they even up anything on the outside that's uneven so that you don't have a big jagged scar.
I had a mediolateral episiotomy, so it cut through muscle and the cosmetic stitches on the outside were so that the scar was as small and healed as flat as possible.

After you've had a baby most vaginas that I've seen (medical student OBGYN rotation) will look different than a woman who hasn't had a vaginal birth. The "tightness" of the surrounding muscles will go back (keep up the Kegels) but 7w pp is early yet.
I don't think this is related to your tear/repair. My tear looked like a little white line at 6w pp if that helps...I straight up had the midwife get a mirror and point it out at my appointment.

@catomd00: oh maybe I misinterpreted what I read. My understanding was just that the husband stitch was when your doctor stitched you up more than they needed to (because it would otherwise heal naturally, but not look the same and perhaps feel less tight?) but maybe it means something else? All I know is I did not care what anything looked like and would prefer not having cosmetic stitches!

@LindsayInNY: oh you poor thing you shouldn't have looked! I was adamant my doctor forget a few stitches, too lol. It looks much more normal now (18 months later!)

@Peasinapod: I thought the husband stitch was a myth because you can't stitch intact parts together? But maybe that's not correct info either!

I was actually annoyed at my Dr for the opposite reason. At one point while she was sewing me up she commented that she was pretty much done, just doing some 'cosmetic' stitches.

Turns out there is something referred to as the husband stitch where a Dr stitches you up tighter than medically necessary so it 'looks good'. In reality it just makes sex more uncomfortable for the first few months!

I would have preferred it just looked a bit different than before. But I wasn't asked my opinion at the time....

@LindsayInNY: the doctor wouldn't tell me either and she said that with the additional episiotomy, they don't even count how many stitches (in the hundreds..). It looked AWFUL for a looong time. Black and blue for months, misshapen, swollen. Then granulation tissue, so it looked like guts spilling out. Really bad.
BUT at 9 months PP it looked brand new! At my annual dr visit, she couldn't tell that I had stitches at all, never mind all the other stuff. It's amazing. Miraculous.
Just be patient, it does take time.

@LindsayInNY: It might take longer than 7 weeks for it to heal enough to recover it's old elasticity, strength, thickness, etc. (I can't believe I am being so descriptive about a vagina :-P ), but IT WILL!

When I delivered my doctor told me i had a tear that required dissoluble stitches. When she was done she said everything looks great and should heal normally, but advised to avoid checking anything out with a mirror for awhile. This is the same doctor that at my 6week post partum appointment cleared me for sex but then tells me if i want to wait longer to tell my husband She said to wait 6 more weeks.

7 weeks is still early. I am sure it will go back to normal!

I had 32 stitches after my first delivery--I had 3rd degree tears and tore in a star shape. With some time, everything was definitely back into working order. Nothing felt different at all! Not sure about appearance because I never looked. :)

I can't even believe I'm posting this... I should buy gold again just for it!

I had a 3rd degree tear that was difficult to repair. At least that's what I was told? There was a lot of blood loss too. Not sure how many stitches. Recovery wasn't bad. After a couple of days, I was sitting fine and walking around fine. Bathroom has been mostly fine too. I'm 7 weeks PP today and have my checkup tomorrow. I looked down below a while back and didn't really see anything alarming (why I'd look at stitches is beyond me but I tried lol). I looked again today and I swear my lady bits look differnet now. Like there's a bigger hole than before. Can that be possible?! I hope I'm just imagining it because I want to cry, if so. I don't even know. Did anyone look different after their repair? Please tell me I'm just losing it...
