I make Buffalo Pierogies. Toss a box of frozen pierogies (I use potato and onion) with melted butter and Frank's Red Hot sauce and bake them in the oven for 30 minutes. Usually 2 boxes makes enough for a potluck contribution and its "different." They taste fine at room temp.

Similarly, frozen potstickers or egg rolls are always a hit.

Great ideas!

@Beyond2: I've never had stuffed celery, but it sounds nice and easy!

@rahlyrah: Hmm fruit skewers...I forgot about those!

@hotchildinthecity: That sounds really good, but what on earth are pea shoots and where do you get them?! lol

chorizo stuffed dates wrapped in bacon. can be served room temp. :p

ingredients:
- 12 medjool dates
- 1 good quality mexican chorizo
- smoked bacon, 6 slices cut in half
- toothpicks
- your favorite tomato sauce
- a few basil leaves, chiffonade

directions:
- preheat oven to 375 degrees
- gently remove pit from dates and a little bit of the fruit inside (so you can add more chorizo!) with a small spoon; try not to cut the date as much as possible
- fill dates with chorizo, either via cutting the corner of a ziploc bag and using it as a filler or making mini balls out of the chorizo and filling the dates
- wrap each date with a bacon half and secure with a toothpick
- bake the dates, bacon seam down, for about 30 minutes until chorizo is cooked through and bacon is crisp
- meanwhile, gently heat your favorite tomato sauce
- assemble your plate with some sauce on the bottom, dates on top, and some basil chiffonade on top...enjoy!

I like to make bacon wrapped almond stuffed dates - always a huge hit and you can serve warm or at room temperature. I love that it's a finger food and people are always super impressed but it's very easy.

http://iowagirleats.com/2012/07/31/bacon-wrapped-almond-stuffed-dates-aka-juice-cleanse-killers/

Depending on the crowd you could also make Pioneer Woman's bacon wrapped jalapeños stuffed with cream cheese - soooo good but spicy

Maybe more of a side dish than an appetizer, but this is my go-to potluck item

http://homecookkirsten.blogspot.com/2007/05/orzo-pasta-salad.html

Someone brought it to my house for a party and I had to get the recipe- it was so good.

7 layer dip is one of my go-to potluck appetizers.
I think the key to making it tastier than the store bought version is adding taco seasoning (either store bought packet or my own mix) to the sour cream before layering it.

My layers are from bottom to top:
Refried beans
Seasoned sour cream
Cheese
Tomatoes
Green onions
Black olives
Diced avocado ( I add this when I arrive so it doesn't brown or squeeze lime on it first to keep fresh)

I second spiced nuts! Usually there is so much food at potlucks, I like to bring something that you can eat in small portions.

I'm going to a pot luck anniversary party this weekend and need to bring an app. It's at a hall and ideally would like to bring something yummy that I don't have to keep warm. I don't really want to bring a veggie platter either... Ideas?
