This is what she did (minus the raffia). And they alternated red and green apples/ribbon.

@Mrsbells: That looks awesome!

If you want to serve something similar at the party, my sister made this dip for favors at one of my showers https://www.livingwellspendingless.com/2015/05/13/caramel-cream-cheese-apple-dip-2/

She put the dip in little mason jars and packaged them with apples, but I bet it's even easier (and less messy!) to just serve a big bowl of it. It's seriously SO delicious!

I came back to this thread to share this awesome recipe I found. its a bit like what @MaryM: suggested with the sugar cookie crust but this recipe also has cream cheese. I am sold on this! I cant wait to make these!

If you're doing premade crusts...what about hand-pies? Then you don't have to try to find tins and they might be easier to bag up so people can take them with them.

@erinbaderin: yes they are both pies. the question is which topping to use. I'll edit the original heading to make that clearer. I love baking and with premade pie crust half the work is done already

To me, both of those are apple pies, and apple crumble/apple crisp doesn’t have any pastry, it’s just baked sliced apples with a crumble topping. To speak to your actual question, though, I think the top picture looks prettier but I prefer the taste of the bottom picture. I also think the whole thing sounds like a lot of work.

@Mrsbells: Most crumbles I've seen don't totally coat the top. Maybe there's a recipe that does though?

@JennyPenny: good idea!

@MaryM: i'll have to look that up online. I didnt realize that the crumble topping doesnt stay in place

@Adira: I think apple crisp has oats in the topping and some apple crumbles are just flour, sugar and butter. so the apple crisp has chewier taste

Is apple crumble the same as apple crisp?

I usually do an apple crisp topping because it tastes better!

Apple pie is my favorite.

But an easier possibility...McCormick & Smick's used to serve these tarts that were essentially pie filling with a cookie baked on top. They might look neater than a crumble (a crumble would have to be held level while transported or else would be a total mess...a cookie baked on top sort of "seals" in the filling better)

You could use premade sugar cookie dough, cut it to size to fit small pie tins, then top it with colored sugar before baking.

I like the taste of apple crumble better, though I like the taste and look of both. If you wanted to do something simple to make the crumble prettier you could cut a few shapes (leaves or flowers or something) out of pie dough and put them on top.

Which do you prefer? For DDs birthday i am thinking about doing small fruit pies as favors (5inc pies) and I'm wondering which will be simpler? I think if I can find pre made pie crusts of the right size it would be easier to just top the pie with a fullcrust and maybe punch out a shape to make it pretty. Sometimes it hard to get the top of the pie to look nice and symmetrical. I always struggle with folding the pie crust edges. So i was wondering if i should go the crumble route since its more straight forward to sprinkle it on top. The only thing is that sometimes the crumble looks messy to me.
Do you guys have ideas?
