We have a smart tv that streams Amazon, Netflix etc. We finally added Apple Tv to the mix this past year because:.

It mirrors quickly/instantly to ipad/iphone. So besides seeing things bigger, we can put pics, websites, youtube up for friends in a group setting.

It also can show pics off my computer wirelessly through home sharing.

It comes with apps or channels that stream PBS kids full episodes, regular PBS, vimeo and a ton of others. Plus you can buy movies off of it and stream music. So $99 one shot can get you a lot. You may even be able to drop your paid online subscription stuff if you are into PBS.

I have amazon fire. I love it! I was undecided between that and Apple TV. The only real difference I see is being able to use iTunes. Not that big of a deal for me. I have netflix and amazon prime. I feel I get a lot more use out of them now that I can view things on the big screen. Plus fire does the voice search.

I couldn't figure out what Apple TV did either. Lol!

We love ours and if you already have apple products you'll find it much easier to use than others. I hate smart TVs. We use ours for Netflix, Hulu plus, HBO go and show time. We also obviously use it for iTunes. I think it's great.

We were gifted Apple TV for our wedding and we really like it. But we don't really have anything to compare it to as that's the only device we have for the TV. We use Netflix, Hulu, HBO go and Apple movies to rent movies and stuff. It's nice to have b/c we can also stream music, pics, youtube or what-have-you. We still have cable but we're going to get rid of it. Apple TV also has a bunch of "channels" that we never use - ESPN, Bloomberg, a Korean channel, kids' channels (DS is too young to watch them right now), etc. Not sure if Amazon fire or smart TVs have the same things.

@Smurfette: Honestly I don't really see a point then either. In my Best Buy days I sold a ton to customers who didn't seem like they were really going to use it, I guess some people just like to have all of the apple things. I don't really get it, sounds like he is one of those people though, haha!

@Smurfette: you can also rent movies via itunes (or if you buy movies on itunes, you can watch them that way. Though it sounds like he won't get too much use out of it. I use it mostly for Netflix, HBO Go (which does have more content than HBO On Demand), and renting movies.

@lawbee11: Unfortunately I have a feeling he wouldn't get the Fire. He thinks Apple is the best thing since sliced bread. We do have Prime. We are going to cancel Netflix, we never watch it.
@wonderstruck: we have a smart TV. so I don't get the point. He doesn't watch anything on his ipad that he can't watch on TV. Watches a lot of HBO to go on his ipad.

If you have a Mac or an iPhone, the Apple tv is great because you can mirror to it, on top of doing what other people have mentioned. We also have an in-home audio system and we can use the Apple TV to play music from our phones.

We have an Apple TV, Chromecast & Roku stick (all on different TVs). The Apple TV is my favorite, mostly because of the integration with my iphone/ipad/macbook, and also the ease of use. The Roku would be second, because it is also super easy to use and has lots of options (Amazon Prime, for example, which Apple & Chromecast doesn't have). My biggest issue with the Chromecast is that you can only control it from your smart phone (no remote) and the app options are limited. For the money, if I were only picking one, I think I'd go with the Roku stick. If money wasn't a consideration, I'd go with Apple TV.

Google Chromecast does all of this, too, but at a fraction of the cost. You have to download the proper apps for it tho. We do all of this stuff from DH's Windows machine, and haven't tried it yet with my MacBook. Not sure if they're compatible, but as long as you have Chrome you can use it.

If you don't have a smart TV (meaning a TV that can access the internet) it turns it into one - allows you to use Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Prime, etc. There's a ton of them.

It also has a feature called airplay where you can stream your iphone's music and videos on your TV wirelessly. And you wouldn't believe how many people ask as they're in the middle of paying for it, "So what is this for, anyways?" LOL! :silly:
