It's not just the manufacturers. Consumers typically want everything for the cheapest price possible, and they usually won't pay more for a certain brand that is supposed to last longer. Over time it pretty much became the norm to make things cheaper and more disposable.

Not saying your washer is cheap, it could be one with. Lot of nice features, it's just that the parts aren't made to last as long. I worked at an electronics store for years, and customers who would pay more for longer lasting stuff were rare. My DH is part of his family auto parts business, and same story there - no one wants to pay more money for better quality stuff that will last longer. It's all about price.

Planned obsolescence. :/

We have 4 year old couches that look like they were attacked by wild animals. They weren't and we are people that try really hard to keep our things nice. I miss being able to buy quality.

Our washing machine is 5 years old and is leaving black spots on our clothes. I hate these newfangled machines.

Yessss! It's sucks. All of our appliances were purchased at the same time when my husband remodeled 8 years ago. Which means things have been breaking on them all for about 3 years. Only parts of our stove and dryer work, our dishwasher is fully on the fritz, and our microwave door has to be held shut to operate. Also, all the drawers in our fridge are broken in some way or another. I'm dreading the fact they're all going to have to get replaced in the not too distant future.

my mum has a fridge that is over 30 years old. the fridge has been around longer than I have! Her old washing machine lasted nearly 20 years of constant use and abuse, and her "new" one is over 15 years old now. I have a miele front loader, I can imagine it will kick the bucket wll before that age.

@TheSwissWifeStyle: We have a Samsung tv from when we moved in together, so 2007. It's been fantastic for us. It's just too small at 40 inches. We can't wait to get a bigger tv.

When my parents had their dishwasher repaired, the repairman said that most energy efficient appliances only last about 8 years at best. There's something about the energy efficiency that lessens the lifespan of appliances.

I don't know if it's "these days" or our location, but I never remember having to do so much upkeep for our appliances. I feel like our dryer is constantly showing this "error" where we have to take this one part out and wash it. And then our dish washer is very picky about what brand of soap tabs we put in. I thought it was totally broken for a while b/c EVERYthing was coming out still dirty. And we've only had our Samsung TV for like, 4 years maybe, and recently we had to send it in for repairs because it was totally broken. It was out for like a month!

We just replaced our 7 year old fridge. The crazy thing is we're on our 8th or 9th microwave. We thought it was something with the wiring at our first apartment since we lost five there but we've lost at least one in each place we've lived. I swear we don't do anything weird with microwaves.

Its really stupid but companies are doing this on purpose. They realized they make more money if they don't last as long. Appliances really aren't made like they used to be. And it's not an accident.

We had a new heating element put on oven in nov on our oven from the mid 80s! Crazy.

Just replaced our washer a month later we bought used in 2008. It was a great washer!

-appliances are so so expensive! I wish they'd last longer.

We had someone out to repair our oven and she told us ovens aren't expected to last longer than ten years really. I thought that seemed pretty ridiculous for how much they cost.

Yes! Our fridge just went out and it was only 6 or 7 years old. It was the fridge on top style. Not super fancy but nice. Several sales people told us these newer appliances aren't made like the old ones and don't last as long! Last year the heating element broke on our stove, also not old, we had only had it for 5 years.

I'm going to sound like a granny here but, they sure don't make things like they used to! We have an 8 year old washer that is dying. It's only 8! It's not fancy, either. I intentionally got unfancy, hoping it would last longer! Darn it!

Do you find your appliances dying faster than you expected?
