@yellowbird: i like the way you went about it. i think if it's a really bad situation, you might as well apply. you still have almost 6 months of working for them! but definitely keep in mind if you're looking to stay long term versus staying for the term of your pregnancy only and let that guide you. if it's long term, then you definitely don't want to start on rocky ground.

@itsmejules: I agree that you need to look out for yourself first. The only time I would question it is if you want the job long term, you don't want to give them a bad first impression. Which I guess goes against what I said about if she doesn't plan to return full time.

@JustlikeHeaven: after they offered the job I had several questions about each offer. After the questions were answered I just told them I was 20 weeks pregnant and I expected I would need 8 weeks off starting in september. They said, congrats!

jobs are tricky. I think I'd apply, and see what my options are, and if you're offered a job, get the offer in writing and then maybe have a lawyer or hr friend look it over to make sure you would be covered with maternity leave/fmla/etc.

I wouldnt mention your pregnancy. I hate to be the one saying this, but businesses rarely look out for the best interest of an individual employee, so you shouldnt be too concerned about looking out for the best interest of the company.

I did! I wasn't working at the time though. I had just graduated and I needed a job desperately. I was 16-20 weeks during my interviews. I didn't mention it during the interview process, but told them after they had offered me the job. I got offered two different positions, and they both were very understanding and did not care a bit. It was great!

I just returned from my maternity leave last week. I ended up taking 10 weeks off. I was planning on 8 but had to take a few off before she was born due to PIH. I was not eligible for FMLA, but they knew I would be taking the time off.

@mrbee: @blackbird: Yes! I am the only employee at my current job and the firm does not offer FMLA. I believe it is 50+ employees. I looked into it. Also, no paid time off AT ALL here.. Luckily, in California I qualified for state disability pay for 6 weeks and then "paid family leave" for another 6 weeks. They only paid about 40% of my pay check but it was all I needed! I received a debit card from the state and thats where my funds where deposited into every 14 days.

@mr. bee-Yeah there are definitely some instances where FMLA isn't applicable. I'd do some heavy research on the rules/benefits of a company before taking on a position with them, especially while pregnant. If they were a big company, though, I'd feel much safer about it!

I do know that California is one of the states that has special rules for FMLA that don't apply in my state.

@blackbird: Thankfully I am under my DH awesome health insurance so that isn't a concern.

@tororojo: Yes, this is how I feel. I would rather just be honest from the get go. Even if it may prevent me from being hired. I just don't know or when I would mention it AND how I could make it seem like a "its not big deal I will asking for 3 months off mid next year." :-/

@mrbee, I believe if the company has less than 50 employees they don't have to offer FMLA....I can't remember for sure. I work for a huge corporation, so I skimmed right over the small business stuff. But i think the 1 year requirement is a federal contingency.

I wouldn't say anything. My only concern would be the lack of paid maternity leave. For instance my company, you have to be here a year before you quality for any paid time. Then it is only 50%.

I think it depends on what your plans are for after the baby is born. If you know you won't be going back full time, I would feel dishonest not sharing at least a little of the information, I think. But if you do plan to go back full time (or, in whatever capacity you are hired for) then I don't know. I'd probably tell after an offer was made, since you'd need to find about your leave options. Since in my experience the interview process takes a while anyway, you'd probably be getting pretty close to the point where people would guess by the time an offer was made anyway. Another option would be to stick with this job until the end of your pregnancy, take whatever leave you get from them, and start looking for a new job after you have the baby? But I guess that's probably not the easiest time to look for a job either.

@justlikeheaven, well, at my company, you get the 6 weeks of partial pay. But that's not contingent on having worked here for X amount of time, either.

Also is healthcare a concern? Some places require you work there for X months before getting their healthcare. At mine, you have it on the very first day.

I would say it's awfully company dependent. If the company you go to work for offers FMLA, you won't be able to access it. But they might offer you a certain number of weeks. You'd just have to be OK going back to work earlier in exchange for a company that is hopefully OK with you having a more flexible schedule/taking more sick days in the months leading up.

I'm of the opinion that if you apply, something AWESOME may come along. But if you don't, you will never know

That's a tough call--I want to say no, I wouldn't tell but at the same time I might feel a little dishonest (this is me personally, not saying you should feel the same). You definitely have the right not to tell, but might have a better relationship with your new job if you mentioned it up front, which is something to think about if you're planning to keep it for a long time. I can see wanting to prove yourself as a worker before announcing, though--so I would either tell before being hired or wait to show that I'm amazing once being hired.

@blackbird: I didnt think about maternity leave! I was paid by the state during my maternity leave in California the last time because my place of work is small and does not offer FMLA.

I would apply but I wouldn't tell them. They can't legally ask, either.

The only issue would be that you may not quality for maternity leave options. And you wouldn't get FMLA because you have to be there for a year to get that.

So I'd certainly weigh the balance of a new job vs. old job and see if you were willing to concede on these benefits. There's a good chance you'd get benefits at a new job...even some sick time or some ability to flex around it. You might even start out with a week or two of vacation.

A friend of mine applied for and got a job at 5 months pregnant. Under a suit, it's really, really hard to tell what's going on.

Would you apply for a new job while pregnant?
I am desperate to find a new job.
Ive been working at my current job for close to 5 years. I don't get any paid time off... sick days or vacation, I haven't gotten a raise in two years (which really isn't what the big deal is) ..
what I really dread.. is any time I have to take time off for doctors appointments for myself and or my daughter it is such a hassle asking. They always say yes but the vibe is all wrong. I know they get really frustrated (because I am the only staff member basically so when I leave there is no one to cover for me.)
I haven't announced my current pregnancy and this is the reason I am dreading it. All the appointments I will have to be leaving for.

I have been looking for part time jobs. I am sure with part time jobs I wont have benefits as well. At least I will be able to schedule appointments during time off.
My question know is.. would you tell the job you are applying for that you are currently pregnant?! I am only 10 weeks and not showing yet.
