She's allowed some slightly colored lip balm but that's it. We are already dealing with her being 'a woman' and boobs (like real ones and cleavage) and she just looks too much like an adult that in my opinion make up isn't needed. However, she has been allowed to color her hair a little. Mainly bc it's done for free by a friend. It wasn't an everyday thing. I don't wear lipstick daily, only for special occasions. I didn't wear lipstick in high school. She can wear tinted gloss in middle school and high school and lipstick in high school but mainly for special occasions. Honestly, I hate seeing young girls with a full face of make up. I live in NYC and have been street harassed by men since I was a teenager. I can recall the times I wore makeup out and the catcalls were crazy. Back then and now, I saw it as an opportunity to be "creative." I liked reading the preteen magazines with tips about colors and such and trying them out. I think it really helped my confidence, actually; and I wasn't focused on "concealing" flaws. So, I'd probably be comfortable with my daughter experimenting around that age, but try to have conversations with her about the "whys" of makeup and outer beauty vs. inner beauty.</p> <p>That being said, all I wear now is mascara, concealer, powder, and tinted lip balm. About 5-7 minutes each morning. My daughter had her face painted as a butterfly and as we were leaving, the facepainter put a little splash of red on her lips. I was not prepared to see my three year old in essentially lipstick!</p> <p>I didn't say anything about it, because it wasn't a huge deal or anything. But it got me thinking about lipstick/makeup and when they become age appropriate.
