We just got the Hungry Caterpillar app. It’s more arts focused but cute and fun and easy to do. Since he liked that I also got an adult drawing app. My son is 6 and super into art.

The Endless apps are worth it! I also like Teach Ypyr Monster to Read. You get to customize the monster and choose the games to play.

Another big hot here are the PopOut! books. They have a set of Beatrix Potter books, which are read Aloud with soft music in the background. You can play with the scenes, squishing blackberries or moving characters. It’s very cute and true to the original books. They have some others that are good too, Luke Night Before Christmas.

My kids love the Endless apps. They also really like Teach your Monster to Read...we got it free when they were running a promo but I think you usually have to pay?

Are there any apps through her school? My kindergartener loved the Endless apps when she was younger, but she’s moved on to more reader-type programs now. She has an app and log in for RazKids and another for math via DreamBox. We used (paid for) Reading Eggs before she started kinder, and she still enjoys that too.

Khan academy kids is a free app my just turned 5 yo likes. Its on the easier side for a Kindergartner but it does go over some phonics and spelling. But I think it requires WiFi.

Dragonbox Numbers is the other huge hit with her.

Big yes to endless and sago mini. Also thinkrolls (there are 3 now I think) has great problem solving - my 3yo can solve a decent amount but the 6yo still really likes the puzzles too. Actually even I like it!

Oh and I wouldn’t worry about it causing problems as long as it’s clear what the boundaries are (only on the plane or in the airport, etc). We don’t do tablets regularly either but when you need it you need it! I also always mention that if you can’t listen about when to turn it off or turn it down or whatever - basically can’t use it responsibly it goes away.

@Lindsay05: Sago mini is another hit here. And I forgot to mention there are some cute book style apps that read stories and are interactive. The ones she likes are all titled '3D Interactive Pop Up Book" and have all the classic fairy tailes like Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast (but non-disney). Edit - they're made by StoryToys

@snowjewelz: Same here - all the Endless apps and Toca Boca are big big hits. There are also My Town apps that are just like Toca Boca where you go into houses or hospitals or farms room by room and can move people and things around (turn on the vacuum. turn it off, open a cabinet, put a person in a chair, feed a cat. etc).

There are some good puzzle apps with different themes if they're into disney or princesses or what have you. Can do traditional style jigsaw drag-and-drop puzzles, find the differences, crossword. etc all within the same app. The ones we have you can pick the level too so they're good for multiple ages.

We genreally prefer apps/games over videos since they're interactive. And we also have Fire tablets with Amazon free time which lets you download/play unlimited apps from their library. I don't know if you could sign up for that and then cancel after the holidays if this is meant to be temporary for the road trips. That might save you some $$ instead of downloading a bunch at cost

Another vote for Endless apps. Worth paying for as DS loves playing with them for hours, super cute and fun graphics, and it’s all about letters, words and numbers. DS also loves this letter tracing one called Letter School that increases the difficulty as you master each one. Tracing on a line to drawing freehand with an animation at the end. And for entertainment, there’s a lego juniors building one he loves and easily mastered to play on his own. You earn different LEGO pieces with each level you finish.

Endless apps have been great, and my 4 year old loves the Toca Boca world apps; it's kind of like Sims for kids and she gets super absorbed in just moving the people around and discovering the "world". I also like the PBS games app; I believe once a game is downloaded in the app you can use them offline.

My kids get to use tablets for road trips and plane trips. We’re traveling for Thanksgiving and Christmas. So far the kids (5.5 and 3) only watch videos. We haven’t dabbled in apps yet. I’d prefer to get apps they can use independently and without much monitoring. They have Kindle Fires. I’m thinking mostly for my kindergartener girl but I also have a 3yo boy.

What apps would you suggest? Bonus points for sight words or phonics related ones.

Alternatively- is it a bad idea to introduce apps at all? They are screen monsters so we don’t allow tablets in our day to day life. I’m afraid I’m opening a can of worms.
