Kiawah or HHI- but the water is still pretty chilly in April, my IL's live near Hilton Head so we've tried and failed at the swimming part that time of year... but maybe that tough Maine blood would make the boys resistant? ;) It's still fun and the weather is nice though, mine are just happy to play in the sand. Kiawah is by far my favorite beach, nothing compares to it in my mind.

But I do like the AZ suggestion.... find a nice resort in Scottsdale and we'll hang out ;)

Following this board as we are in the exact same boat ;) I am also feeling overwhelmed by the restrictions planning this trip (Zika, crazy expensive costs, traveling with 2 littles and a pregnant lady, etc).

Hmmm...I think Charleston! You could get the OBX feel by doing Kiawah/Folly Beach, but you'd still have the "stuff to do" part of the city, both just generally for activities with kids and in case the weather is crummy for beaching.

ETA: I'd say DC if you were looking for more to do (but would be a fair amount of walking if you weren't careful). And something in the SW if you were willing to travel farther :)

Definitely double check any ideas you get from older articles. We went through trying to find a Zika free beach for this April and the CDC site had updated to include basically anywhere you'd want to swim at that time of year except maybe Arizona, Nevada and Hawaii. Thankfully, my in laws are footing the bill and picked Hawaii. We're super excited, probably the only positive from Zika I've heard of!

Relaxing = beach to me. I found this list that has some great suggestions: https://www.tripadvisor.com/VacationRentalsBlog/2015/07/22/vacation-rental-picks-10-east-coast-beaches-making-a-splash/

@PinkElephant: I love Bermuda! We went on our honeymoon there and are going to go back in few years for our 10 year anniversary! So, probably will save that one for kids free and the ability to moped around the island!

Bermuda! I went with just DH in August, but there were plenty of families with kids at our resort (Rosewood Tucker's Point). You can rent a golf cart for the duration of your stay to get around, which I definitely recommend. Didn't see a single mosquito - a friend who used to live there told me there's really not enough standing fresh water on the island for them to breed, which is one of the reasons it's Zika free.

ETA: The flight is about 2 hours from NYC.

Edisto Island is further south than OBX and would be a relaxing beach vacay (you could fly in to Charleston).

If you're looking for a warm beach vacation, the Outer Banks won't be super warm yet in April (though, may be relative given that you are coming from New England). What about the Charleston area? If you did one of the Charleston-area beaches (Kiawah, Isle of Palms, Folly) you'd be close enough to take advantage of the city as well - there's a great aquarium and kids museum, plus awesome restaurants.

Washington DC would be really nice then with all the cherry blossoms. And it's great for kids. You'd still have the walking issue, though.

@winniebee: Yah! Just depends on what you are up for at that point. Hard to say but the ages of your kids would make it ideal for fun. The Park is so huge with the zoo and other things to check out. We went several days. I favor Heckscher park but there are many options. https://mommypoppins.com/newyorkcityfamily/new-york-city-playgrounds-guide
Also have a plan b of several various museums nearby if it rains.

OBX will still be pretty chilly in April. You'd probably need to go further south. Maaaayybe the end of april but its still pushing it. On the flip side, you'd get amazing rates for a house. If your kids love the beach regardless of weather it could be a good time. But its still a drive from the nearest airport (norfolk I'd guess). About 2 hours.

@winniebee: Yes, so true. You are probably right. Only way it would work is if you were to just pick one activity a day and visit part of the park a day. Also you'd have to choose a hotel right next to the subway entrance that goes straight to the park. Even then, you might not want to walk up and down the stairs so guess that leaves you with the option of relaxing in the hotel with room service. :)
YOu'd probably want to go somewhere with a view of nature though, huh?

We are looking to go on vacation with the kids in April (then ages 5 and 2.4). I'll be 28-29 weeks pregnant so want something relatively close to us and Zika free. We live in New England but are open to a quick flight. Thinking maybe outer banks or Hilton head? Any other suggestions?

Thanks!
