Our boys were a handful at 4. One of my co-workers (who I generally look to for child rearing advice; her son is 19 now) has said that prepubescent boys are such a handful, teenage boys are pretty easy.

Now, I get that is just one opinion, but everything she's told me so far is true and I want to believe her for our teenage years with 3 boys.

I liked 2 and 3 better. 4 has been hit or miss.

I only have a son, but so far, his 4s have been better than his 3s.

I really don't think it has anything to do with sex, though, I don't buy into those stereotypes.

@matador84: working for awhile with pre-k through 2nd graders, I agree. Seemed more even with the 2nd graders but with the 4, 5, 6 year olds I always found the girls easier in general. Not sure why though! Eta- and I think it'd be interesting to ask male teachers and see if they agree.

My son just turned 4 and I was hoping we'd see some improvement in his behavior. *sigh* He's been somewhat difficult since he was 18 months but the 2's and 3's were definitely some dark times with blatant defiance, him ignoring our rules, not being gentle with his younger brother, and being super needy! I'm hoping as 4 continues, things get better because he can understand reasoning more...crossing fingers!

4's have been my favorite with DD so far... loving this age. Actually, 3.5 and beyond has been great!

I guess only time will tell with DS... he is definitely in the throes of his 2's though.

@SAHM0811: I'm so glad to hear this! I feel like there's so much to look forward to.

I loved the parenting stage when my eldest DD turned 4! I think she was most difficult at 2 and 3. She still had some tantrums at 4, but only a handful of bad ones that I currently remember. She's 7 now, and has been an overall delight the past 3 years. Some pre-teen emotional issues are starting to emerge though...

When I think about the prek classes at my school, we have a more difficult time with boys than girls. But, this could be due to variety of factors too...

I loved Mrs. Chocolate's post on the front page right now. We also had a very difficult time with Charlie during the 4's, and I've heard similar stories from other moms of 4 year old boys, but not really from moms of 4 year old girls.

I read a book called Your 4 Year Old:

http://www.amazon.com/Your-Four-Year-Old-Louise-Bates-Ames/dp/0440506751

and it said that boys have a huge surge in testosterone at age 4, and they don't have such a big surge until they're 18! so it's understandable why boys are so fidgety, emotional, etc. at that age.

Share your stories about your 4 year old girl or boy... how hard was 4?
