@Happygal: the mesh backing had never bothered me. The sunshade really isn't great- our regular stroller is an ubv and im spoiled with that one. We have mostly used it in warm climates so I saw the mesh letting a breeze through as a plus. I also like handle bar vs two handles so you can push with one hand if needed.

@Astro Bee: thank you for that input--very good to know! I read a lot of complaints about the Vue and thought it might be better to wait for a few years so they can improve on the model.

@Foodnerd81: I'm glad you love it. Our local baby store said that it was their most popular travel stroller. Apparently they sold out last summer and weren't able to get any more. They have a hard time keeping them on the shelves!

@HappyGal: If you can, go to a store and try out those two strollers. I tried the Summer Infant one at BRU, but it seemed a little clunky. It could be because it was a store model, but I found it hard to adjust back and forward. The BJ Vue is on sale right now, if you like it. Neither of them are as light as the Nano, however.

@Astro Bee: good to know something worked out!

I've been looking for umbrella strollers for an upcoming trip as well. Summer Infant and Baby Jogger make reversible ones, and I think the Vue can accept car seats.

@Foodnerd81: what about the mesh backing on the top of the stroller? That's the only thing I've wondered about--does it allow sun and wind to pass through all the time? Is that a problem?

@Astro Bee: I don't think you will regret it! Ours is so convenient and I love that I can use it right away for our next baby too. Keep your receipt though- we have a small issue with a screw that keeps coming loose but I don't think I'll be able to have them fix it since I lost all proof of purchase. No big deal though. It really is great!

I ended up buying the Mountain Buggy Nano. At only 13 lbs (our jogging stroller is over twice that) and a ridiculously tiny fold, it's the easiest stroller for travelling. Plus it has a built-in travel system which is compatible with our infant carseat. I haven't yet decided whether we will take it on our international trip, or rent from the same company that we are getting our carseat from, but we will be visiting family this summer, both on the east coast and west coast, and it will come in handy then. Also with a maximum weight of 44 lbs, it will be good for years to come., so the price tag of $199 doesn't bother me so much. Plus, I know with the infant carseat, my baby will be safe and secure until he graduates to the seat. Thanks for weighing in, bees!

Okay, I'm sold on not buying an umbrella stroller. Thanks for weighing in, everyone. I have both a wrap, that a friend loaned me - which I haven't attempted yet - and a SSC. So I'll probably just baby wear. I've also looked into renting at our destination, and there is a company that rents both car seats and strollers/travel systems. It might not actually be practical for me to lug everything with me anyway, since it doesn't look like I would be traveling with DH. We're now thinking about taking a shorter trip a couple of weeks before so I can "practice" traveling with the baby. DH has a business trip to a city where I have some family located, and it's domestic, rather than international - so much shorter and less stress.

@Kayakgirl73: @Shopaholic: I never even considered that, but just checked and there are a few frame strollers available for half the original price in my city. So that's another option, thanks!

@Banana330: We are going to NZ, but I couldn't find out if you can use foreign carseats if you are just visiting. I've heard Oz has really strict safety standards.

@Astro Bee: I never started using the stroller until 4 mo old. I carried her everywhere and walked for miles. I think for eating I unclipped it (I have an ergo) and held her kind of off to the side. So, I wouldn't be phased by not taking a stroller (plus, she didn't sleep in the stroller anyways). Another thought - some cities have businesses that rent baby equipment. You could look into that and see if they have any strollers that recline totally flat.

I wouldn't put a newborn in an umbrella stroller. They're not strong enough to sit at that kind of incline. If you want a baby that small to be portable, I would suggest a wrap.

@Astro Bee: when c was really little (under 6 months) I ate 80% of my restaurant meals with one hand while I nursed her under an a&da blanket. I got really good at ordering food that could be eaten one handed. One time a friend had to cut up my cheeseburger like a toddler. You deal. :)

What about the Chicco KeyFit Caddy to hold you car seat it's like a snap n go and but is especially made to hold the Keyfit. I think it runs around a $100 and you should be able to use a coupon at Buy Buy Baby or Babies R US. It's fairly lightweight but has a generous basket. The can also be easily re-Sold on Craigs List.

@Astro Bee: I would also not use the umbrella stroller that young. We took LO overseas at 3.5 months. The carseat + snap-n-go option worked out great. You can find some on Craigslist for usually pretty cheap.

@foodnerd81: @birdofafeather: I may have to practice baby wearing more. Although, I frequently end up finishing my supper with baby in my arms, wo a carrier. Not saying I haven't dropped food on him, lol!

@turqoiusemama: That is an excellent point! Do you think an infant insert placed in an almost flat (or flat) seat would protect the neck/head if going over a bump? I guess it gets back to my original question of how stroller manufacturers determine age recommendations. Because some strollers are listed for newborn or 3 months, and I've only noticed that they lie flat or near flat. Obviously, carseat compatible strollers are listed as from birth and are outside this discussion.

@Astro Bee: Even if the infant can hold their head up and you're not worried about it flipping forward, there is also concern about going over terrain that is not completely flat and the baby's head being jostled from side to side. This could injure the neck as well.

@Astro Bee: Are you near a bed bath and beyond? they can order all the buy buy baby stuff (in Canada) and they take the in store coupons. Bonus if you make a registry and put it on it before buying it, they ship it to your for free!

Where are you going overseas? Maybe you can rent a stroller when you get there?

We're looking at taking our LO to Australia and when I was looking in to it I found you can't use foreign carseats there. You can rent car seats and strollers which might be our best option.

@Astro Bee: in regards to eating out and baby wearing- it's not that easy sometimes. C preferred being worn for the first few months and it was definitely harder for me to eat over her head, than my friends whose babies were sleeping or chilling in the strollers. But, my baby didn't sleep or chill in her stroller. And I definitely did eat full meals over her head, but more when she was a bit younger.

@Astro Bee: yeah it is pricey. We completely lucked out and got the floor model at bbb, plus the coupon. But even if we had paid full price I think it's worth it. It's so easy to travel with and takes up no space in the car. Plus I like that when we have two, we can switch between putting the baby in the car seat in it and having the toddler walk, or wearing the baby in a carrier and having the toddler in the regular seat. We walk a ton even on vacation so I didn't want a cheap stroller I hated.

@Grace: I was planning to baby wear through the airport and check carseat and stroller. For a 2 week trip, how practical would it be to baby wear? DH would be working for 5 of those days, so I'd be on my own during the day. Also, how would we manage eating out? Is that feasible? FTM here.

@Astro Bee: Have you tried babywearing? That might be the easiest thing to do right now and then you can get the lightweight stroller for the trip after that.

I would also not use a regular umbrella stroller for a 2.5 month old. I would get one that reclines flat--if you plan to do a lot of traveling, it will be worth it anyway. see if you can find one used.

@bandsmommy: The ones I'm looking at recline to about 30 degrees from flat, which is more than car seats (45 degrees). They're mostly all recommended to 6 months and up, although I do see one that is 3 months and a couple that are newborn. LO also has really advanced head/neck control for his age. We don't have a lightweight snap and go system. Our regular stroller is a Baby Jogger Summit X3 with a Chicco Ketfit30 carseat. We're travelling overseas and don't want to take a big stroller. Although we are taking the carseat.
