Any kids we know from play groups or school, basically anyone we know by name are friends. Any other random kids are that boy, that girl, etc.

No, I don't call everyone her friend. I would just say "we do not hit people".

I use it with kids her age, she generally wants to play with everyone. She's on the playground a lot since it's right behind our house and she def has some better friends than others. But I don't want her to start excluding other kids or kinda start down the this is my friend/this isn't my friend path yet, she seems a bit young for that. So right now I do tend to call kids her age a friend.

In that situation, I would have told Chloe "we are kind and gentle to others, and we never hit people." I try to be careful with my words. She's almost two but is starting to take things super literal & I wouldn't want to give her the impression that its not okay to hit friends, but okay to hit strangers.

The little girl across the street is hands down Chloe's BFF. She calls Chloe her "best fend" and its the cutest thing, butter girls are together a LOT so...

DD is two years old and at daycare, all the kids in her class are called "friends." As in, the teacher will say things like, "No, we don't hit our friends, we are gentle with our friends, we do not bite our friends" etc.

I'm not too careful with the term "friend" because I figure that eventually she'll learn on her own what it means to be and have a friend. I think at this age, we're just trying to teach her to be kind to other people by calling them our friends.

I use the term friends, regardless of whether it's a child my LO has just met or one she plays with all the time. I figure there's plenty of time later for her to figure out what makes a friend, but at 15 months old, we're just working on the concept of how we interact and treat peers, ie friends.

I do use the term "friends" if the child is someone we play with often. I have a great group of mom friends and we get together once or twice a week with our LO's. I feel like it's appropriate to use the term if it's someone DS spends a lot of time with (and likely will for a long time) but I wouldn't use it for someone we just met or didn't know well.

Haha. This topic brings up memories from my SIL's emails. She sends us all pictures of my nephew and "his buds." You know, because you can have "buds" at a year old. :) I don't use the term friend yet. There is one girl at daycare that M likes and who likes her back (you can tell because they play nicely next to one another and smile at each other when they see one another). Someday I may call her her friend but for now, she's just another kid at daycare to me.

Today at playgroup, my daughter (15 months) got pushed around a bit by another girl who is a bit older than her (it wasn't a big deal; my daughter was definitely annoying her!) The mom immediately stepped in to tell her daughter that this behavior wasn't okay.

What I thought was interesting was that several times in that short conversation with her child, she insisted that my LO was her child's "friend" and that we don't hit or push our "friends". I 100% see where she was going with this, but it made me think...our kids have played together at school maybe 4 times, max. And to be quite frank, they seem to antagonize each other more than they play nicely together. I definitely wouldn't call her my child's "friend" - if anything, I'd say the girl doesn't really like my daughter! :)

The point of my long-winded story - Do you tell your child that everyone is their friend, or do you use the term more carefully?
