@DillonLion: Exciting! I hope you get a good offer and you can take some time to focus just on the new career and your family. You can always add on coaching later!

@Anagram: Thank you! I agree, and it just seemed like there was no way I could do any part of that position well. And that's not fair to the kids, my boss, my family, or myself.

@DillonLion: I think you made the right choice declining that particular offer. It's better to get a job just teaching and then take on additional duties later after you get your feet wet (and trust me, in teaching, there are TONS of extra duties you can take on if you are so inclined---all the clubs, groups, sports, committees).

Fingers crossed you get the next offer!

Just as an update: I met for a 2nd interview and was told that the job was mine if I wanted it. After weighing all the information I decided to decline the offer. It would be too much time away from family when a very big reason for my career change is to have more time with family.

I have had 12 interviews with schools so far and I'm going in for a 2nd interview today with another school who seems geared to make me an offer as well (my references gave me the heads up that they have been called), so I think there will be other options in my future for jobs for the school year next year.

I so appreciate the feedback!

I used to coach diving only 3 days a week and I can't imagine doing it with a baby. I love being home I guess... as soon as the day is over I want to go home! I teach in a public school in New York which pays well but coaching pay is absolutely insulting. You must really love what you coach to stick with it.

@DillonLion: FYI ...track in these parts is Thursday meets til like 6 and then all day Saturday. For volleyball, ask if it's just one team i.e. Varsity or if you have to stay for all games varsity, Jv, freshman, which sometimes run back to back...

Is this a private school? In NY, they don't advertise for teaching/coaching positions. They focus more on the academics for hiring, and I guess if you want to coach that might be an added bonus.

I have never coached, but I would think it would be extremely challenging your first year, especially if you have two preps. I did take on a position as an advisor for yearbook in my third year and that was hours of extra work, but manageable.

If you feel like you won't have many other options, and you have a good feel, go for it. But, it sounds like you have many interviews lined up, so it might be nice to weigh all your options!

Do these schools ask you for a demo lesson? That is the norm here in NY since it is much more telling for those hiring. Regardless, good luck!

@DesertDreams88: I am meeting with my 10th and 11th school this week for interviews, and its only May, so it seems like there might be several options to choose from. I don't think there's a shortage, but I have an in-demand certification (science 7-12, so I think that's contributing to the amount of interviews I'm getting)

@katsupgirl:

1. Not sure who the head coach is, but I can find out on Friday I'm sure!
2. Different seasons (volleyball - Fall and track - Spring)
3. I doubt it! But I could ask
4. Thanks for the feedback on his schedule? Getting home at 7 would be even later than I get home now, and I hate how late I get home now...so I think I need to think long and hard about this in general.

@DillonLion: congrats on the 2nd interview! I had just had a few thoughts/questions

1) the assistant position probably won't be that much of a time commitment as long as the head coach isn't a slacker. If you guys hit off it would be a great experience.
2) are the sports the same season or different?
3) are they sports that the school depends on to do well? If not then it could be a low pressure position.
3) as long you get mentally prepared and have a good way to keep yourself organized it sounds like a great opportunity to get your foot in the door.

My husband taught Chem and AP Chem and coached one sport in the spring. He is usually home by 7.

I coached the first 7 years of my teaching career. There are plenty of people who do it and have kids but I did not do it while having kids and NEVER would. The hours are way too long and for me it is not worth it to be away from family that much. I spent hours on weekend scouting in and out of town, week nights at our games and working for the high school. I remember thinking I had had just about enough when it was midnight one night and I was taking the jock straps out of the washing machine and into the dryer and thinking they sure as hell don't pay me enough to be doing this.

There are many times it is rewarding--the wins, the life lessons, the relationships with the kids--but at this point in my life I would not trade that for what I have now.

I am so curious as to what district your interview was in. I also had to get my CDL and I refused. I didn't feel comfortable driving a bus full of kids up and down Central Expressway or the Tollway in the peak of traffic...enough was enough for me. Once I got out of coaching I never looked back!

My husband is a 2nd year teacher (science, middle school level) and has coached 3 sports since the beginning. Yes, it can be time consuming especially during football season, but he reallllyyy loves it. It's usually 12 HR days until the 3rd sport is over with in May but it worth it to him and he's found his calling  He does go up to school on Sunday mornings to lesson plan but that's mostly because he keeps getting stuck with crappy co-teachers who don't help much in that department so he ends up doing the planning on his own.

It is a lot to take on, but it can be done if it's something you enjoy and if you don't mind the time commitment. I do feel like the stipends don't always compensate accurately for the time spent but DH gets paid pretty well teacher-wise and it really helps that he is happy and loves his job and the people he works with. Good luck!

My husband and I have both been teachers for the past 6 years. I was never a coach, but I was an after school tutor and once the tutoring director. He has coached 2 sports a year for the past three or four years. I personally would not recommend coaching at all or taking on any extra commitments your first year of teaching. There's just such a learning curve to this career and so much extra work outside of the normal hours. Coaching might pull you too thin and make you feel like you're not doing right by your students by not having enough time to create good lessons. During the season, my husband worked 8a-5p at school, and put in an extra hour or two at home. Once you get into the rhythm of things, though, coaching is a great way to bond with your students, as a previous poster said.

That being said, I don't know what the teaching field is like in your state. Is there a teacher shortage, or are there lots of applicants for each job? do you think you'll have other opportunities?

I didn't read all responses but that sounds crazy! I coached for the first 5 years of teaching. Game days are later than Norma and there are often practices/tournaments on weekends and holidays. I "retired" before having kids.

My DH is a high school teacher and coached girls hockey. It was the first year he did it and honestly it was totally fine. I think it would have been hard on us if he did two sports in the same season. He commutes an hour both ways and typically leaves at 7 and is home at 4. On coaching days depending on where the game was, he'd be home by 6. It was not a big deal for our family. I just feel so lucky that most days he is home by 4.

@BUNBUN: @DillonLion: Our Athletic Director handles all of the schedulling. I don't have to do any of that. He also handles the coordination of busses and refs/facilities. As for driving the bus, we have a 12 passenger van that I routinely drive the players in.

I think the biggest thing to remember that has got to be much less about the money than the meaning. Yes, for me (a single Mom who's father moved in to help watch her daughter), the extra few thousand dollars made a difference for me, even if I was away more. I knew my daughter was in good hands with Grampa. But, the time seemed hardly worth it when I really sat down and looked at it. But that mentor/coach role is something that I am truly passionate about. It makes all the difference. Otherwise, you will get burnt out and quickly.

My husband is a teacher and a coach. He also commutes an hour to work, so he leaves home at 7am and I usually don't see him until 7pm during season - later if it's a late game (practice ends just as rush-hour is getting bad). He has to ride the bus with the kids to their games and practices (even the home field is 30 min from the school) and he has to wait for every kid to be picked up (he coaches at the middle school level). He loves it, so it's worth it for him (the pay never is). Keep in mind, the MEETINGS! He's got at least 1 scheduling meeting in the beginning of the season that takes up a weekend day, plus lots of time on the phone with coaches figuring out the actual game schedules and refs, and he has another 3-4 hour meeting at the end of the season to discuss playoff scheduling. He has an assistant coach who doesn't work with him, so they typically chat for 30min - 1 hour after practices. My tip from personal experience: try to schedule your games early to get the best dates and cluster them on certain days of the week. It's not always possible, but it's easier for me to plan around every Tuesday than try to keep track of which nights will be super late each week.

He has also been an assistant coach, which is usually much less of a time commitment (no scheduling, only attended the big pre-season and post-season meetings). He and the head coach sometimes took turns riding on the bus so that one of them could go home straight from the game.

@DillonLion: teaching 2 preps, doing all that grading and lesson planning, AND coaching 2 sports sounds absolutely brutal for a new teacher. I personally wouldn't do it, but that's my personality. Coaches work some looooong hours for relatively little pay.

You'll have days where you teach a full day, have a faculty meetings after school, go directly to practice or a game, and get home at 7 or 8 pm, and still have to grade papers for the next day.

My husband was a high school coach for a while. Its something I think you should do if you love the sport because the stipend you would probably get paid would no where near compensate you for your time that you would have to put in.

I work in a high school as an administrative assistant/student support role. I don't teach but I do have a pretty full schedule of study halls that I proctor. Beyond that, I coached JVB volleyball and JV Basketball this year.

There is certainly a time commitment involved. Typically practices and games would be about 2-3 hours. But, I was not required to stay for the varsity games (which would go into the night significantly later) and much of the time I was able to drive myself as many of our students get picked up at the game. We didn't ALWAYS have to take the bus back to the school after the game. But I don't think we are the norm in that way.

Beyond that, it has literally been the greatest thing that I have done. Coaching is so wonderful and the bond that you gain with the student athletes is something really special. Being able to be in that mentor roll for these teens has been incredibly rewarding for me. Challenging at times(15 ninth and tenth grade girls with very differing personalities in close quarters for 10 weeks in the winter in New England....ha), but also wonderful. The girls all called me "Coach" in the hallway at school and being in the school helped to keep an eye on them from an academic and discipline stand point as needed.

I love coaching. Love it. I make very little money to do it but the other parts of it make it worth it to me.
