Definitely there is no doubt that the cost of sposies & their counterpart wipes would've cost more! I spent around $150 dollars on our cloth diapers & accessories (including a small nb stash) & at 1 year all are still going strong! I am fixing to spend another $100 to double the stash & get more inserts now that P pees more, but still can't complain with an under $300 total.

Ditto to second baby but also being able to resell them after you're done. Cost wasn't the deciding factor for us and I don't track the math but honestly when I use disposables when traveling I spend twice as much time from leaks etc. I wanted to ditch cloth after one month but I'm glad we didn't now that were more settled.

@MerryC: @JoJoGirl: @highwire: def makes sense for additional children. i've kept some of our supplies and dipe stash in case we want to go this route in the future.

I think one of the major cost savings come into play when you factor in using the stash for more than one child.

We plan to use CDs for our 2nd kid too (assuming the ones for the first kid work), so that tips the scales for us. I think it also depends on when you start - ie if you'd been CDing when it was 10 diapers/day instead of 5, that's more savings.

I'm pretty sure we broke even a few months ago, but we don't pay for our water and E goes through like a dozen diapers a day (down from 18-20 a day when he was a newborn), so for us it was definitely more economical to go with cloth.

We have a well, so no increase in water bills, plus I only wash them twice a week. We also only spent $250 on our CD stash (prefolds & flip covers). The cost definitely varies.

The additional factor for you might be that you get fewer diapers per box as LO goes up in size.

We go through way more diapers per day than you per kid, so cloth is much cheaper for us. The increase in water bills is really slight in our house. We've spent about $600 for our stash (for twins), and were spending $3-5/day on disposables, so we'll break even in 6 months or less.

we recently decided not to go the intended CD route and realized that in our house that CDs aren't cheaper.

DS goes through 4-5 diapers a day and I buy the economy packs of huggies for $35 (sales) and it lasts us more than two months. so it's around $210 a year. (add on a couple years 'til he's potty trained) and it's still only $650?

The CD supplies and dipes alone were $300+ and ongoing water bills?

While it would've saved us some money the first month we weren't going to be CDing because of the fit...

Did I do my calculation right?
