I like dogs, but I don't like being jumped on by puppies, especially when i'm holding a baby (my SIL has a brand new puppy and she just doesn't stay down yet!) If your dog is chill, it's not a big deal. I was picturing 12+ kids running around for the party and the dog snacking on people food and bugging everyone. I always put my cats away b/c i don't want them to get stepped on!

@Foodnerd81: Glad I'm not the only one! I was starting to think I'm a bad host..... but I'm in the camp that it's the dog's house, and other people are just guests in this house. Of course I'd feel different if she was bothering people like crazy or someone was allergic, but the majority of our friends and family are dog lovers and the ones who aren't have learned to accept that if they want to come to our house, they are going to have to deal with our dog. I could just imagine my poor puppy howling in the back yard trying to get our attention :(

@artbee: Good call on bringing the pup to the dog park in the morning! And I'm with you, I couldn't put my dog away for a party, he'd be so unhappy (which would make me unhappy when he barked to be let in to the party anyway).

I prefer NOT to have extras out, because I can't help myself and I eat that stuff and then I am too full for the main stuff!

@blackbird: @Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Nope, our pup will stay out. She's pretty good when it comes to food because we never give her table food, and there aren't enough kids there that I'd worry about it. She wouldn't like being away from the party, and we'd like to have her there. There's a pretty chill pup, after saying hi she'll just go lay down. Plus I'll make either DH or my mom take her to the dog park that morning so she'll be tired out.

@Foodnerd81: My family and friends will eat right away, we're not about waiting for others :) But I could put something on the dining room table, I'll probably do that. Thanks :)

@blackbird: +1 for putting the dog away, I find wandering animals a bit off putting when food is being served and consumed. I try not to think about the food prep.

As long as food is ready to go and a drink is available snack stuff can be skipped altogether.

I don't think they are a must. BUT, it is nice to have some nibbles right away. Is there someplace higher up that you could put something little and hand held-- mini muffins or something taht goes with brunch? I imagine you won't have people start eating the actual brunch until everyone arrives, right?

Or, you could just have drinks (OJ, Coffee, mimosas if you are doing) out right away and people can wait and not eat for the first 15 minutes if people are late.

Would you consider putting the dog away? This way you can be sure he doesn't get niblets off the kids (kids love to feed animals!) and/or jump on the small children or people.

We didn't want to do unhealthy snacks at her bday party so we opted for a veggie with hummus and my brother's brought sashimi.

We're doing a brunch for LO's first birthday. Food will be ready as soon as you walk in the door. I would like to put things out to munch on too..... but we have a puppy so leaving food on the side tables or coffee table isn't a good idea.

Should I just skip it?
