I think it's completely fine! Your cousins are a different generation than your child. If I had the same first name as MY cousin that could get confusing but I think it's totally fine because your child would be calling that other person uncle blag blah anyway.....

I'd go for it. I think it's way less weird to share a similar sounding name (or even the same) with a cousin of a different generation than a cousin peer.

My first cousin has two kids: Kyle and Kayla. In my younger days both names could have easily been on my short list. Her kids will be at least a decade older than any of mine. A name like Michaela for a girl would be fair game.

Yes F/ E or F/S are bad ass sidekick names.

I don't think your example is weird!! I think if LO's full name was Elliott or Elijah, I might assume you named LO after them? But Eli alone isn't weird.

ETA: I also wouldn't think it's weird if you're not very close with the cousins! I have so many Elizabeths and Lindsays in my family but none of them are that close.

ETA: but yes, for DH and I, cousins' names (and their kids' names) were off limits.

Not off limits to me. The only thing holding me back from using family/friend names is the idea that that person may think we named LO after them? Which is weird to me, but probably silly!

Well our son's name is shorten version of his full name, so we are weird like that and want to have the same pattern for them both :)

Why can't the name just be Eli and not a nickname for anything? Solid name.

@pawprints: Maybe that's why Eli alone doesn't sound weird to me? I've known many Jewish Elis.

I say go for it! Honestly, if there was a name I had my heart set on and a cousin, sibling, friend used it or was named that name, I don't care. Your baby is one of a kind. Name him what you want :)

ETA... However, I wouldn't use the same as a niece or nephew, so maybe I would scratch what a sibling used. Everyone else is fair game :)

I don't think it's weird. Maybe a little if they went by the same name, but even then I wouldn't let it stop me. My dad and his cousin have the same first name, but my dad goes by his middle name. My cousin's son (5yo) has the same name as well, and goes by it.

In my family, with MY first cousins we have 5 males with the same name and 4 females with the same name - its common as we are Greek and they are my grandparents names. With the 3rd generation (our kids) nobody has the same name. That being said, my youngest daughter's first name is the same as her 2nd cousin's middle name.

Elias coincidentally, was actually one of my cousin's picks, but then my other cousin named his son that, and she was sad because to her that meant it was off-limits.

I think it's fine - either just use Eli or whichever name you like better. Unless you see your cousins a lot (I don't even know any second cousins) it's not a big deal.

FWIW DH has a brother and a cousin (who they saw several times a week) named John - they both had different nicknames so it was never a problem.
