@ mrsjacks you know the baking soda insets are reusable right? You just replace the baking soda.

We have the munchkin diaper pail. It's definitely convenient. If you have pets I'd say its a must. Also it will be nice when lo is mobile and keeping them out if dirty diapers.

Nope. We just bought a tiny stainless steel bin with the foot controlled lid and would take it out every day or every other day, depending how quickly it filled up. We never had an issue with smells and just used regular plastic shopping bags as bin bags.

We don't have one and never missed it. I felt weird about sealing bags of poo and having them last longer than my child's future grandchildren!

As for the poo smell we just flush it all down the toilet - disposable diaper poo and cloth diaper poo. :)

LO doesn't fit her cloth yet so we are using disposables in a regular trash can with a lid - no issues. Just get the kind that opens when you step on it. We also have those mini bags that are baby powder scented for diapers that we use for extra smelly poopy ones.

Oh, and agree that it's not a must, but it's a nice convenience if you don't want to run to the trash a lot, especially when stuff really starts smelling when they eat solids.

I do not have a genie and don't find that I need one { we use both cloth and disposable } I wouldn't want to deal with all those special bags you have to buy. Just get a can with a tight lid , that's what I have :) I also think dg are far too large and you end up storing way too many dirty diapers in your nursery!

How often will you take out the trash? My sister just used a paper grocery bag for diapers, but the trash room for their building was right down the hall so they took it out every day. To be honest, the changing area did ever so slightly smell like diaper sometimes. This clearly wouldn't work if you wanted to only take it out once or twice a week!

We just registered for a cheaper "diaper" pail that uses regular kitchen bags- it has a tight fitting lid but I don't expect it to totally contain the smell. I'd rather take out the trash very frequently though, and with the diaper genie, I didn't want to be annoyed at taking out half full expensive refill bags. But LO isn't here yet so this is in my head.

We registered for the Ubbi diaper pail, which is steel. We had it recommended by a few people (and highly reviewed)- we did NOT like the idea of having to buy different, brand specific bags. The Baby Bargains book outlines which diaper pails require their own bags and which use standard trash bags. From what I've heard and read, steel/metal help hold in odors better than plastic. Plus I liked that the Ubbi can convert to a trash can after you are done with diapers.

Either way if you don't have the Baby Bargains book I TOTALLY recommend it! Best $9 I ever spent!

Did anyone just use a standard, closed lid trash can to dispose of their diapers?

I'll totally get a diaper genie if they prove superior, but just want to know if the expensive trash bags and refills are worth the extra cost.

Thoughts/experiences?
