@looch: i agree, although not all daycares are created equal. i know of some dirtier daycares in our area and i definitely see more sick kids coming out of there. i'd like to think that ours is clean which contributes to DD's infrequent illnesses even though she is in daycare full time.

@Rock n Roll: i know, it was a completely unscientific question that i threw out there! there are many other factors to consider like genetics, diet, sleep, who they interact with, etc. i am glad your DD doesn't get sick very often either! :-D

I think it's really hard to pick that out as being the ONE reason. My daughter was breastfed until she was 14 or 15 months and doesn't get sick very often, but her dad and I both don't get sick very often and she doesn't go to daycare.

I think kids get sick if they are around other kids or adults. My son didn't get his first cold until almost 10 months, he caught it from my husband, who caught it from another sick dad at work. I think he would have gotten sick much earlier if he had gone to daycare, which is the experience every single one of my friends who returned to work have faced. Not saying that it is the daycare's fault, it's just I don't think they keep things that clean and kids often are contagious before symptoms present themselves.

For me, sickness isn't a bad thing, it's an inconvenience more than anything.

Baby Y has had a couple of fevers/colds, but nothing serious that required meds. He still BFs at 10.5 mos.

We are at nine months and no ear infections. She had a could during the winter when she started daycare and then caught a bacterial cold this month. She has avoided pink eye and hand foot mouth disease.

charlie got sick as soon as I weaned at 9 months. i think that was just because it was winter and he was going to a lot of classes/playspaces.

olive got sick before she turned 3 months old -- she caught it from charlie. she was sick for 3-4 weeks, but has been fine since. we shall see if she has a better immune system since i intend to breastfeed her longer + she'll be exposed to more germs since she has a brother.

Just from doing a quick survey of the people I know, I find this to be untrue if that is the only factor taken into consideration. What do you think?
