@sslm: Yes, it totally sucked. I'm the oldest and I was 9. He was the 4th baby. They ended up having another one (my baby sis) because my mom couldn't let that be her last pregnancy.

Interesting question! My mom had 2 miscarriages and 3 pregnancies to term. I haven't conceived yet, so I guess we'll see :)

Interesting. My maternal grandmother had 2 but none of her children or grandchildren have had a miscarriage.

Mine wasn't. Ours was chromosomal. My mom Lost a baby, but it was after a full term delivery. He was born alive, had trouble breathing, had surgery, and then crashed after that. Hubby's mom had one, but I think hers was due to age.

I think it depends on if they find a cause for the miscarriage, like a blood disorder or something. For me, I have had one, my mom and sister had none. There aren't really any in our family, so it's unlikely to be genetic.

Thanks for all the insight. I'm glad no one thought it was a stupid question and that I didn't offend anyone.

I am SO excited for her and husband. DH and I were in their wedding last year and they are such an amazing couple.

I think some are and some aren't. I had a miscarriage prior to my current pregnancy. But to my knowledge no one else in my family has had one.

Not a stupid question at all! I know that there are quite a few medical conditions that can cause/contribute to miscarriages and those conditions can be genetic (PCOS, progesterone issues, mthfr gene) so technically I’d say that the answer is yes. My mom had a miscarriage, I had 2 and my sister had 2 as well. My mom was never diagnosed with anything but both my sister and I have PCOS with low progesterone.

ETA: A lot of it IS just random though I think. Miscarriages are unfortunately pretty common :(

Well,I think if it's due to blood clotting or something similar, it can be, but most of them are random I think. My Mom and MIL never had any, and so far I had one.

That's a good question.

I had two before this baby (one was a chemical pregnancy).

My mother had 3 miscarriages--the first between my twin brothers and my third brother, and two more between him and me.

Her mother had six (that we know of) spread between her four children.

This is probably a dumb question, but can miscarriages be partly genetic? A close friend of mine announced to me yesterday that her and her husband are pregnant. She mentioned that she was nervous to get to the 12 week mark because her mom had 7 miscarriages before 2 successful pregnancies. Apparently she's already seen her doctor twice (she's 7 weeks) because they consider this slightly high risk.

It got me thinking - I had never heard that before. I always thought for the most part, miscarriages are unexplained.
