I would definitely do morning daycare as there is more awake time once the kids are on one nap (which for us starts when older infants are getting ready to transition to toddlers, around 1 year old). In our daycare the infant schedule is unstructured, but the typical toddler schedule is:
Drop-off
9 am breakfast
10 am outside or activity
11 am activity or outside (opposite from what happened at 10)
12 pm lunch
1-3 pm nap
3-4 outside
Pick-up

@PinkElephant: Is there a way to tell they're going to drop the nap soon?

My daughter started an afternoon program (not daycare but same timing/types of activities) around 14 months - when I signed her up (at around 11 months), she still took a morning nap but by a month into the program she'd dropped it and needed an afternoon nap that made it tough to get to her program on time. Mornings would've been much better but I didn't know it during registration. A lot of other moms of kids her age had the same predicament...I'd go for mornings if you think your LO might shift schedules soon - it seems pretty typical just past 1 to ditch the AM nsp and sleep forever in the afternoon.

@birdofafeather: I'm pretty sure we can switch if we need to; they just have a thing about keeping the peer groups consistent from infancy through preschool.

@spaniellove: How long do you have to commit to one program or the other? Do you have the option to switch when needs change?

@birdofafeather: This kid is bizarre. He'll start his nap at 8:30 and over time the nap has gotten progressively worse (longer) - now he wakes up after 11 so basically he sleeps all morning and dropped his 3rd nap. Not even sure how I can get him to stay awake in the morning!

Based on my full day experience, I would probably say morning. The kids all tend to arrive before a certain time because of parents heading to work. And at 1 our daycare has them on a long one nap schedule. So lunch was around 1130 and then nap could go as late as 300. Pickups are far more varied. So I feel like afternoon routines tend to be shorter.

Once she changed to 1 nap, I only do stuff in the mornings. She switched at 12.5 months, so I would pick a morning program.

I realized that for half days we could choose between mornings and afternoons at a place we're considering, and knowing LO I'd almost certainly choose afternoons but I think mornings are when routines are better established with LOs. If you have an around 1 yo (give or take several months) in daycare, do you think being there in the morning only or afternoon only would be different?
