We did a shoot in our home when DD2 was 9 days old, 11 months ago, and had a couple of posed-style photos with a headband, on our couch, but mostly did lifestyle pics with the family. Here are a couple of them. I'm glad we have a few posed pics, but think the more natural interaction ones are my favorites. I'd bet that your favorites will be pics of your LOs interacting, so I'd do something where you can kind of do both. (Now I have a tear in my eye looking at these and realizing how much they've changed in almost a year!)

@youboots: Yeah I happen to really LOVE this photographer and trust her, I just need to decide on a style. And I'm just leery of finding someone else. Just need to think on it:) Thank you for your input!

@PrincessBaby: I think when posed infants are done really well they look timeless if that is the look you like. What I mean is barely noticeable editing, even light, even skin tone, overall very natural. I mean I would expect that you will have other photos done in future years that will replace the newborn canvases, so I would think more in the next 5-7 years than forever and ever. Your tastes and photography will both evolve.

That said, I think what is popular in photography is also very regional. I would not let the photographer using the word 'still' cloud your decision too much. For example here in the NW I don't often see bridal shoots when the bride in her wedding dress is photographed prior to the wedding so a canvas can be shown at a reception, that is very popular in the South.

As long as you love the work of the photographer and they have a solid portfolio of images that you would be proud to hang in your home you can not go too far wrong. Choosing a style you don't like as much just because it is perceived to be more popular or on trend is not a good reason to pick a photographer IMO.

I just got posed ones done back in August but we also had some lifestyle ones done too. I can say that I love both equally. I have some of each up around the house. Go with your gut!

@whenoceansrise: Gorgeous!

@youboots: So that's really why I was wondering if it's on the way out or already done - I am going to spend a lot of money on them and putting them on canvas, and then hanging them in my home. If they're already going to look dated, do I want to stick with that style or do something that may look less dated soon? Kind of like those red tinted photos from back when I was a baby - totally dates them:) Or chevron print - it was so popular and now it makes me want to rip my eyeballs out every time I look at it. So if it's already done, then I don't want to necessarily do it, because I do like the lifestyle too. So you nailed it:) I know several people were like "Why do you care?" But really that's why. They're going to be on display in our home.

Another photographer popping in to weigh in.

We are opting to work with a photographer who does both posed and lifestyle but to focus on a more lifestyle look in our home. To me it's not about one type of photography being easier than the other, it is about what you prefer and what they specialize in. IMO I don't love super posed shots because many of the ones I see will not age well (remember color selection) and it does not feel very authentic because many poses have to be manipulated in post production to be safe for the baby (like their head resting on hands).

Kudos to the photographer you contacted to not try and do something that they do not specialize in. I have to do that with wedding clients from time to time. Sure it's hard to miss a job, but I'm looking for a good fit and the long term happiness of myself and my client.

Ultimately pick what you love, and make sure they have a solid portfolio not just promises that they can pull something off. I'm sorry you had a bad expirence with the past photographer, not everyone comes with talant and grace :) good luck!

Posed newborn/baby photos aren't going anywhere. They have been around since the beginning of photography. There are posed pictures of my mom as a newborn in the 50's. I think you're safe there.

I think your photographer was just telling you that posed photos are not her forte. Posed newborn photography is HARD. "Lifestyle" photography is so much easier. I don't blame her. If she doesn't feel comfortable with the posed photography, don't push her. If that's what you like, pick someone who can do it well. You're better off spending your money on someone who knows what he/she's doing.

@Mae: I totally agree with you! My DH is a hobby photographer and says the same about natural light photography, haha. Buuutttt...that woman only charged $450 for the session with digital rights and she was an amazing baby whisperer, and all the well-known people in our area that were recommended to me were charging insane package fees starting at $1000 and going up, with very limited prints included and no digital rights, so you get what you pay for, haha.

And yes, the posed shots require a lot of props--she had an entire car packed full of giant bean bag things, blankets, wraps, headbands and diaper covers, this contraption that made a background with cloth draped over it, etc.

I think you see less posed newborn photos because getting those photos done is more expensive and not a lot of photographers can do them (well) so they say they only do "lifestyle" shoots rather than saying they don't know how to do posed photos well. Sort of like how a lot of new photographers love to say "I'm a natural light photographer" which is code for "I don't know how to use a flash or off camera lighting." (I guarantee every photographer every will use natural light to the fullest extent-- but there is not always enough natural light to create the best photo).

I think posed photos, when done well, are great. I think "lifestyle photos" when done well, are also great. One challenge of lifestyle photos is that you have to have your house clean and pretty. Which is hard with a 1 week old.

But regardless-- get what you like!

(bias alert: I do newborn photography and I do both posed photos and lifestyle photos in every shoot. I've never had anyone not want any posed photos. But I certainly understand why a lot of photographers don't want to do them because you have to haul a shit ton of props and posing stuff and then you have to deal with trying to change a baby multiple times and get them calm and settled into various positions. It is a lot harder than lifestyle photography. So I'd personally be sort of psyched if posed photos went *out* because they are a pain in the ass to do. lol. But I don't really see that happening).

@buttermilk: I think even lifestyle photos with newborns will feature mostly asleep newborns...since newborns sleep more than they are awake.

My LO slept throughout the entire photo session at our house.

I don't think you can go wrong either way! Below are a some lifestyle and one posed photo--all asleep babies!

@LindsayInNY: More candid shots vs. posing with props that don't really happen IRL (baby in a basket, hanging mid-air in a cradle of gauze/muslin, head propped on hands sort of thing).

There are lots of photographers who still do the posed studio style photos. Whether they are out or not, people still like them. I'm not sure I would ask her to take pictures she normally doesn't do - I'd just ask for recommendations.

I still see both types. My photographer just did want I wanted. I think it's totally fair to request something similar of what you had for your daughter. Our newborn pics didn't have a lot of props and were more the natural style but I have boys. I didn't want a lot of fuss for boys. With my second, the photographer took some lifestyle pics without me even asking. I didn't realize I would like them so much.

@ShootingStar: I see a ton of lifestyle baby shots of the mom, dad, and baby on the master bed. The problem with that in MY case is that our master bedroom is the only room in our house not decorated. It's a hot mess right now in particular because my granddad passed this year and I got two antique rolled-arm stools at the foot of my bed from their house--but they are a hideous shade of dusty pink.

We don't have a real bed. We don't have nightstands. We have the hideous pink stools at the foot of the bed. No way do I want that memorialized, haha.

Lifestyle is really popular right now. Truthfully as a photographer its easier. Posed takes a lot more time and effort to get babies to settle in and then move then around and its also a lot of gear that needs to be moved around. I have assisted my friend who does posed shots and she set up a studio now as she hates lugging everything around. Lifestyle is more realistic and easier on photographers as well as not sucking up half a day when shooting one client.

With that said I still love posed ones. Thats what I want to shoot and am working my way toward. I feel like its a skill and a talent and when done right it can be worth the cost and I love the way they look personally as Im all about props and I love buying them

Yeah, they're on the way out. We had DS at the end of 2013 and our photog was transitioning from posed to lifestyle. We didn't have great light in our house except for the nursery so we ended up doing the posed ones. (For whatever reason she insisted the lifestyle ones she did were usually in the master bedroom, which I thought was weird.)

Thanks everyone! I think I may ask her if she can work with me to at least get a couple in those headbands/outfits - really there are just 2 that are important to me. I like both styles, honestly, so maybe she can help me do a little of what I had with DD1 and still mostly do her thing.

And if she isn't ok with that, then I'll check out who she recommends. I'm just leery of totally new photogs for something so important. DD1's NB photog was a friend of my wedding photog and did backup for her at my wedding. So I trusted her from the get-go. We moved states and I found a photog who did DD1's 1 year pics and she was just so unprofessional and I was so unhappy with her. I got pics that were great even if they weren't exactly what I wanted, so I just sucked it up and DH and I both agreed never to use her again, but she does GORGEOUS posed nb pics. And I can't even believe I"m tempted to talk to her again but I almost am.

Her maternity photo shoots are awesome too. But I don't know that I really want to deal with an asshole for 2 photo shoots...Even if she is totally gifted with her work.

My DD's were posed as well and they are still my favorite pictures taken of her, so I'm going to try and do the same thing for DD2. However, I did buy new headbands/ect. so that way they were more her "own." And I did buy wraps, which I don't think were really "in" in our area when DD was born. I do plan on having a mixture, our pictures will be in our home, so I plan on getting some more candid shots of us rocking her, our family in our bed, ect.

The photog is an artist and probably wants to focus on jobs that allow her to express her style and method. I don't think she was trying to be insulting. She just doesn't want to compromise on her approach.
