I pretty much just buy what I like regardless of budget and it mostly ends up pretty equivalent because the cheaper stuff gets worn out, and the nicer stuff holds up and therefore can be resold to recoup some of the cost. You do run the risk that something more expensive gets stained or doesn't resell but I'm ok with that. And this is within reason... I buy my kid smocked clothes and Ralph Lauren, but I don't buy them Burberry. I've never been a fan of the style of either HA or Tea Collection so those aren't really on my radar. I always forget about Mini Boden but a girlfriend just reminded me so I'll probably get some fall basics there this year.

The biggest issue I have with clothing quality is shrinkage. I ain't about to hang dry every little item my LO wears which means her Target and Old Navy stuff shriiiiiiiinks like crazy! For me more expensive clothes can be worth it because they don't shrink as badly and she gets to wear them longer. I still shop cheap for LO because that's our budget.

@stratosphere: My MIL buys Peek for LO and I can attest that the quality is great.

I've had really good luck finding HA stuff at a once Upon a Child (just got two baby dresses for $5 total). My sister uses HA for her kids and then they get handed down to mine in perfect condition.

I buy Old Navy or Gap for basics but now that DD can wear things longer I do like to buy Mini Boden or Crewcuts occasionally when on sale- especially since I can usually consign when she outgrows and get my money back. But she doesn't usually get too dirty/stains anymore either.

I only buy on sale, and I think HA's quality is worth it. Pieces I've had for years (2 kids, 4 seasons) look brand new. I love Boden's look, but I don't think their quality is dramatically better than more affordable lines. I wouldn't pay full price on principle, but on sale and having two of the same gender, I'm definitely getting my money's worth.

I'm picky about fabric, so I tend to buy the same brands repeatedly. I like Peek for tee shirts, Mini Boden for pants, and Hanna Anderson for pajamas.

It's worth it to me because I buy on sale and because LO doesn't have that many clothes (they all fit in one drawer of his dresser).

Pricey brands aren't worth it for us because there's no guarantee LO will wear them. She didn't wear any 2T shirts, shorts, skirts or pants because she was in a dress phase. Even then I couldn't get her to wear about 1/3 of her dresses.

HA has lasted very well for us - my husband pre-treats stains, but the dresses hold up so well and my LO loves them + the pjs are great, as everyone says. We buy big and can get a pretty long life out of them, and hopefully #2 will get some wear too (although they will be 6 maths apart).Customer service is excellent if there are ANY issues. I buy on sale, and now we are close enough to ship free to the store.

@agold: Kissy Kissy holds up so well! As an aside, in my experience it runs about a size small (i.e. when my kid was wearing 3 to 6 mos in everything else he was wearing 6 to 9 mos in Kissy Kissy). He grew out of some of his outfits before I realized this! We also love Magnolia Baby.

I thoroughly agree with @pinkcupcake's assessment and have experienced the same. I have made money off a lot of our smocked items because I'll get them on great deal, etc and then the going rate will be more than what I paid. I also pretty much always have a bucket of oxy clean in the laundry room and have yet to meet a stain I can't conquer (knock on ALL the wood).

Now that my kids are not growing out of things every couple weeks, I like buying higher end brands (Tea and Boden mostly). Their closets are probably 50/50 split between high end brands and Target, Gap, Old Navy stuff. When we are hanging out at home, they're in basic stuff quite a bit, but I like nicer things for going out to story time or play dates. I'll admit to stripping them down to diapers to eat when we're at home, but if they get messy in their nice stuff I just accept it. They're kids and their clothes just can't stay pristine! I find that higher end stuff washes well, retains its softness and colors betters, etc. But mostly I buy the high end stuff because I like the way it looks. :silly:

totally worth it in my opinion.
Hanna is great quality and they have a 100% satisfaction guarantee. I bought DD some tights and she didn't like them because they were scratchy. Took them back to the store and they gave me a full refund, no questions asked.
Most of the clothes last for 2 years of wear too. DD still fits into the dresses she wore last summer.

Yes, bc I can typically resell on BST boards and recoup most of my costs. It usually doesn't cost me more than $5-10 in the end, which is the same as if I had bought something from target or old navy which generally has no resell value and I end up donating or giving away.

I think most higher end brands hold up better. I am obsessed with Petit Bateau and buy it at the outlet or on sale. It's high quality, holds up wonderfully and has great resale value. I also really like Boden and HA (when I can get it). I tend to buy nicer brands for tops and dresses but still buy cheaper bottoms because my kids get holes in their pants so fast.

I've decided I like getting 3-4 outfits plus maybe a special occasion outfit each season/size from the higher end places. I'm off the mindset that I only get to choose her clothes for so long and I enjoy picking pretty things. That being said, the vast majority of her wardrobe is hand me downs and stuff from Target or outlets. I like dressing her up a tiny bit for music class or going out to dinner.

As far as quality, I'd say it's hit or miss. Most of it holds up better BUT in take better care of Boden stuff than Target stuff, in large part because I can easily resell the Boden but no one will buy the target stuff.

I love hearing about all of these baby clothing options! I have received a ton of second hand clothes - enough that I think baby girl doesn't need any more. But I still wanted to buy a few things. I found a brand called Kissy Kissy that is made with pima cotton. I'm obsessed. I get the items on sale and I feel like they are a good deal. The cotton is so very soft. I hope they hold up well!

I definitely don't. I get lots of lo's clothes second hand & have stumbled on a couple of Hanna Andersson things at Goodwill, but otherwise can't justify spending much on things she may only wear a couple of times or that may end up stained anyway. For the most part, all the new clothing we have were either gifts or clearance. I haven't had trouble with the quality of any of the things we've gotten new & of the used items, they are also holding up well enough. I only have complaints about some of the cheaper brands shrinking.

I probably do this kind of backwards, but I only buy pricey stuff for special occasions. Last year at Christmas I bought DS a really nice outfit and he wore it maybe 3 or 4 times for different Christmas occasions and professional pics. But his regular clothes I stick to Old Navy and Gymboree with a coupon. They are just not careful with his clothes at daycare. They come home stained with all sorts of colorful stuff. I'm never sure if it's food or marker or what, lol. By the end of a season, most of his clothes are pretty much shot. They've either been washed to death, or they've got stains I just can't get out. I don't really care how things hold up in the wash because by the end of the season he's grown out of most and our LO2 is a different gender, so they all get tossed or given away anyways. I don't really have the energy to try and sell his clothes. So better quality doesn't really provide much value to me.

I figure that most of his clothes are pretty inexpensive so I can justify buying more expensive special outfits that will only get worn a handful of times. Which again, is probably backwards given the cost per wear is much higher. But in my head it's perfectly logical :silly: .

I don't splurge on kids' clothes because they normally get ruined from stains not from wearing out. I have noticed that footed pj's have been getting worn out so I may start buying my oldest some better quality ones. I also would splurge on outdoor wear since that is less likely to get food/potty stains and it's something that I want to really be warm and good quality but we mostly get hand-me-downs so I haven't had to yet.

I think some of them hold up better but whether it's worth it depends on your situation. If you're only having one kid or have 2 of opposite genders to where only one kid wears the item it may not be worth it. I really don't think it's worth it for kids under 2 since they are out of sizes so quickly. I'm more willing to spend more when they're over 2 and stay in clothes a little longer. Also would be willing to spend more if I knew I would have 2 of the same gender (and season). But my baby #2 is a boy so that is going out the window. I would never pay full price though

Now that I have 2 girls I am willing to spend a bit more on kids clothes, since I know it will get many years of use. I've noticed a few brands (Hanna Andersson ---- adore!!!, Hatley, See Kai Run, LL Bean, etc.) have held up much better than the Old Navy, baby gap, Carters stuff. I still buy a lot of cheap stuff for daycare play but I do find some of the more high quality stuff washes better. I buy the more expensive stuff on sale - it will definitely last me through two kids so I save $$ in the long run.

Agree with peek and hanna having great quality, multiple wash, dry and wear cycles and still looking and feeling GREAT and colors holding up. I'd want to add Polarn o pyret as another brand for great quality pieces that last years and years (especially outerwear if you live in cold climates) and its not high end but Bonds Australia. They have free shipping if you spend 100 australian dollars and the USD is SO strong right now its a great deal when they have sales. Their wondersuits are even better than hannas imo. Two way zips, foldover cuffs for the hands and feet, stretchy but holds shape. Gosh they are amazing. Actually I've been really pleased with the all of the 25+ items I've purchased.

I get DD1 a few pieces from Mini Boden (staple pieces that are very versatile) - to me I think the quality is worth it. I do usually shop when they are 20-40% off depending on the sale I find.

NO WAY! At least to me. I am cheap. I buy most things second hand... and not name brand second hand, like Target and Old Navy second hand. But, I suppose people can spend their money on whatever they like! I'd rather allocate that money elsewhere.

I splurge buying new clothes for LO from the clearance rack at Target/Old Navy/Kohl's!
