We have it in the Tahoe and end up taking that car on long road trips because my 2 yr old loves it. We bought the Grand C Jeep and didn't get it because we thought IPad all the way. But the problem with that is my son is still to young to really navigate it. And if we mounted it to the back seat he wouldn't be able to reach it.

I really like our RES even though we have an iPad as well. My main reason is that in an accident, an iPad in her hand is likely to cause a serious face trauma....whereas a RES is built in and crash tested and won't turn into a projectile. Since most of her movies are digital, I buy a few on half.com to keep in the car. And I tell her it's for long trips only because I don't want her to ask for it for every 10 minute trip.

We use our rear entertainment a lot! It's just easier than than taking the iPad in/out of the house, charging it, not having wifi, etc.

@matador84: we have a RES for our odyssey, and although we've used it... I do think it is (or will soon be) a thing of the past. with an iPad, you can just get an iPad car mount - http://www.amazon.com/Passenger-Universal-Headrest-Vibration-Extender/dp/B00GUPPGSA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1434945324&sr=8-1&keywords=ipad+car+mount

We actually got this for a recent trip where we needed a rental car, but had to drive a long distance. It worked well, and was easy to turn it around facing the front if I needed to change out a movie/show for the kids. I try to avoid dvd's and try to buy streaming shows whenever I can.

We have one and though my kids ask me to use it all the time, we only use it on one hour or plus drives. I've never had any issues telling my kids no!
That being said, I wouldn't buy it again. Pretty soon they'll want to watch different shows and it would be better to allow them to watch what they want and not fight that battle.

It's a requirement for us. Our screen drops from the roof, and we keep it up most of the time. She will ask for it particularly when we return from a trip, but the answer is often no. The DVD's of her tv shows are relatively cheap from Amazon so I don't mind buying them. I don't see giving our kids tablets in the car at this age. Our oldest is almost 4.

@Corduroy: @Foodnerd81: we have a RES in my odyssey and the kids only get it for trips longer than 2 hr. You could debate that we don't even need it since we use it so infrequently. But anyway they know that's the rule and don't even ask. I think it is better for car sickness though. My DS puked while coloring in the car during our last trip, but watching the RES was just fine.

My almost 3 year old only gets the iPad for road trips...we probably take 6-8 3+ hour trips a year. He rarely gets it during other times so it's never been an issue. I'm afraid with a RES kids would want it all the time too since they know it's there. I love having the iPad for road trips, I download movies off iTunes and then he can watch a movie or two in between books, naps, etc.

I saw on the outbacks a RES is an option but in not sure it's worth extra money still.

@Corduroy: @Foodnerd81: My kids don't ask for it every trip. It totally depends. Some days they are content looking out the window or singing along to their CDs. But if not, the video works wonders. We don't have any complaints with it.

@Corduroy: that's a great point. I always think it's so weird when I can see people playing shows on the entertainment system for something as simple as dropping the kids off at school. Can the kids really not go unentertained for ten minutes?!?

@Corduroy: I was wondering about this too. Like, I would think kids could understand they only get the iPad for long trips, but if they can see the entertainment system every time they get in the car, would they beg for it every time? Pure speculation since my LO is not even two, still RF, and I'm afraid to give her any screen in the car because of the one time she puked all over the car seat from car sickness.

DH and I have been discussing this for an upcoming vehicle purchase. We think iPads are better since the kids won't expect them every car trip which they might with a built in system. That's just speculation. Anybody with experience on that?

If it was included in a car I happen to be buying, sure, we'd use it. But it's not something I would allocate extra dollars to given the convenience of the iPads. I'd rather upgrade to include an in dash navigation system, or more automated features, etc before spending money on and entertainment system.
