i was more concerned with syllables. I was really worried that naming my daughter fiona would be too long (even though its a shorter name) because it is 3 syllables... but now it doesn't seem too long at all.

I grew up with a 4 letter name that is too short to shorten and I was always jealous of my friends growing up who got cute nicknames. So I am partial to longer names (for a girl) boys I don't really care how many letters:)

I have a long first and middle name, but had a short last. Then I got married. When we bought a house and I was required to sign my full first, middle and last names on a line next to DH's (usually on the second/right handed column of the paper) my name wouldn't fit!

But with all that said, our top girl's name is very long (7 letter first, 7 letter middle, 9 letter last) and I would still definitely use it!

How dare you. Genevieve is our LO's name. To be fair, though, our last name is quite short--only one syllable. I don't know if we'd have chosen it if we had a long last name. There are some short names I love (Jane, Claire, Anne) that I won't use as first names because I think it doesn't sound right with our short last name.

My DD has a 10 letter first name, but our last name is only 4 letters so it sounds ok. When they were learning how to write names in preschool, her teachers would only make her write hers once - as opposed to several times for the other kids. They said she would get worn out if she had to write it too many times.

I agree that it's more about syllables and not letters. I don't have a problem necessarily with names with a lot of syllables but would probably give them a shorter nickname.

@autumnlove: We picked a shorter name. In fact, all of the names in our top list were short. Like 6 letters or less. But, I think names like Genevieve are beautiful! (I bet they use a nickname, though.)

It was a concern of mine that LO has a long full name but ultimately we just named her what we wanted.

First is 8 characters (3 syllables), middle is 7 characters (4 syllables), last is 7 characters (3 syllables).

@Shutterbug: i have 28 letters and 11 syllables! haha... people could probably say the same about me :P

i really like long names but because we have a 4 syllable, Japanese last name, I ruled them out. My favourite first names for boy/girl are both one syllable names to make their lives simpler.

That said, if the last name is super short, I love long names! But you have to be prepared for the nicknames, because they will definitely get them!

My BFF has a 25 letter, 10 syllable full name (first middle last) and I always tease her that she likes it because she gets to be the center of attention for longer while people say (or write) her full name.

I think my preference is more about syllables than letters but i prefer a longer, more flourished name esp for girls. My first name has 9 letters and 3 syllables. DD has only 5 letters but still has 3 syllables. our last name is short though at only 4 letters.
