Jersey shore here - I feel like it's worse this summer than last - people getting caught up in riptides and whatnot. Not sure of the exact numbers but I feel like I'm constantly reading about it in the news!

There have been way too many (any is too many!) drownings in Ontario this year. Lots have been men between 18 and 31 I think the news said, and then young children as well. So scary! Most of the men is foolishness, and alcohol involved, the kids are lack of supervision or getting into water too strong or deep for them.

Not many people have private pools here because the community pools are awesome and there are a number of private clubs that a lot of people belong to as well. That being said, we live on a large lake with a strong current and have the aforementioned pools, almost all of the parks have easy lake access too. In the three years I have lived here there hasn't been a drowning and I have never even heard one mentioned (with the exception of a suicide.)

People here start water safety as soon as a kid can sit up and swimming lessons really early and I have not met a kid here yet that can't swim better than me by the age of 4.

I'm In Florida so we're surrounded by water, both oceans and pools. We opted out of a house with a pool because I didn't want to have to worry about it. I figured we could always build one when the kids grow up. My parents have one and got a fence for it before my lo started crawling.

In Alberta we recently had a rash of adult drownings in various areas- one of DH's bosses drowned jumping into the water from some sort of platform two weeks ago! I can't say that I've heard much in the way of children drowning so far this year, just a lot of grown men making bad decisions :(

As of last week I believe, the drowning toll in my province has hit the 44 mark and there's still August and September. It's kinda scary to think that more and more kids are drowning, when security is suppose to be better. (laws about fencing pools etc)

We actually have an above ground pool and we closed it with a lock. We moved stuff around to be sure no child could climb and go over the fence but still... it's scary.
