We had a Learning Tower when my boys were little. It was the best thing - for eating, snacking, cooking, them just being at the same level as me when I was in the kitchen and they were doing an art project, etc.
Would definitely recommend.

Not a chair, but maybe consider a Learning Tower. We've had one at the island for over 7 years at this point, since my older child was around 2 years old, and my youngest is still using it at 6.5 yo to eat breakfast/snacks, "help" us cook, etc. They would be standing but my kids don't seem to mind and definitely very stable.

Our kitchen table is our island as it's huge and made for 4 stools to eat around it like a table. When they were babies, we used the clip on Ingelisa chair. Otherwise, we have stools with backs on them that we bought from the previous owners. Honestly, it was still a nerve-racking few years when they were transitioning from the clip on chair to being able to safely sit in the chair. The main issue is them using their feet to push off of the inside of the island and almost tip over the stool. I tried strapping one of those Fisher Price chairs so I could strap them in but it was always the feet thing. So, we just dealt with it. They weren't allowed to be up there unless DH or I were there to monitor and we just white knuckled our way through it. But yes, having a back to the stool is a must.

What about getting one bar-height stool with a back until you feel safer with them on the stool?

We have the large island in our kitchen that seats four and a dining table. My 2.5 year old has been sitting in the stools at the island (for the record, it was not me who introduced that habit) and it makes me uneasy with how unsafe it is.

I think I may need to get rid of the stools and we will all have to eat at the dining room table. Or find some new, safer stools. The dining room is separate from the kitchen which is unfortunate.

How can I protect the table from spills, dents, etc? I was thinking of getting one of those foam table pad protectors and putting a wipe able table cloth on top? Do those table protectors protect against dents and scratches?

Any other ideas?
