We also prefer multi-functional, long-lasting toys. As in, all she has to do is push a button and it'll light up and make noise and essentially entertain her instead of her learning to entertain herself. But anything that requires her to actively play, we'll go for, even toy drums or cymbals or other "noise toys" that most parents hate. I don't have anything against them in general, and they work for some kids. But I come from a family that's obsessed with them and it's really pathetic. They basically live in comfy armchairs pushing buttons, and very few things make them get up and go. I don't want to stare at a bunch of ugly stuff! And I don't like supporting commercial characters with my money. I am pretty anti-Disney, etc. (I think I would be ok with Sesame Street if I was confronted with it.) But my son is only 20mo, so I'm sure eventually he will get exposed to some of that stuff and ask for it. He already knows Thomas the Tank Engine even though we only have one book and a few trains.</p> <p>We have Playdoh and an indoor kinetic sand box, but we only take them out when we can supervise him. He knows that the sand has to stay in the box, and the Playdoh has to stay on the table, and he is pretty good about respecting those rules.</p> <p>We also have a radio flyer bumper car which makes cartoon-style noises when it bumps into furniture. I actually find that one kind of amusing and have no issue with it. Nothing that requires batteries or makes really loud noises. No iPads or anything like that.
