I think it's interesting that folks are picking up on the big Asian presence. I talk a lot about race/diversity for a living, so I wonder if this opens up some folks eyes on what it feels like not to be part of a majority group. Both the benefits (learning new things) but also the disadvantages (feeling left out or not understanding certain words/cultural nuances). I think so often unless you've been part of a minority group, it can be eye opening to understand that in America at least most Asians are always the minority within the minority. Often we are relegated from mainstream society as "off white" as the conversations concerning race seem to be always focused on the Black, White, and Brown paradigm. Asians always seem to not have an authentic voice, and maybe that's why we are big on blogging as a space to be heard.</p> <p>So I've very much enjoyed being able to hear from other bees especially those that are Asian as you can see we are all so different and unique, but we also share common cultural bonds and traditions. We live in Upstate and there are lots of Asians around because of the local state university. Although there are local Asian residents not enough where there will be more than 1 or 2 in each class. Both of our family trees are just English back to 1600s, as far as we can trace!</p> <p>I grew up in an area of our city that was mostly Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi families - there were only 5 white kids our primary class. I learned all about their religions, cultures, foods just as naturally as I learned about my own and celebrated their festivals at school alongside Christmas and Easter. I was in the Indian dance group and have pictures of me, aged 7, in Indian clothes and a bindi dancing at a festival! Our school so embraced diversity, we had a full Chinese dragon (costume? is it a costume? puppet??) and every year, when we did the nativity play, the Chinese dragon would weave around the room to celebrate the birth of Jesus!! It was amazing, actually - I guess diversity is all I've ever known. I really wanted to be Indian, growing up .... When my mum gave me the old net curtain when she bought a new one I didn't pretend it was a veil, as many little girls do, I pretended it was a sari! I still toast and grind my own spices and make lots of Indian foods from scratch.... DH hates my English cooking but he loves my Indian food!</p> <p>But.... how weird is this..... I don't know any Chinese or Japanese people and I've never even met a Korean IRL! There just isn't an Asian community where I live.</p> <p>PS - Gangnam Style is massive in the UK too!
