Well I don't think Mavrick (Maverick) will ever become a female name. Seems to manly to me.

I think it's interesting you bring this up because in our process of deciding on boy names, one thing we want to make sure of is that the name will not be a girl's name. It's very, VERY difficult to find classic names that have not been given to girls at some point.

My daughter follows a tradition that her and I are both named after our maternal and fraternal grandfathers. I love having a different name and I hope she does too

I don't think we can predict what future trends may be.

I remember reading somewhere once that ALL female names began as male names, I don't know how true that can be, but looking at how many names have a male form, or are unisex, its not hard to believe.

Charlotte, Jonna/Jean, Lucy, Renee, Andrea, Nicole Alexandra, Davina, Natasha, Lauren (knew a male), Danielle, Gabrielle, Patricia, Tomasina, Kevin (knew a female), Marcia, Melissa, Olivia, Kristina, Robin/Roberta... SO many female names are feminized forms of male names to begin with. My husband shot down truly girly names that I like just because (Lily, Felicity, etc), and none of my female relatives had good names (Laverne? Marlys?) So I went to the most influential person in my life - Charlie - and chose the feminine version of his name. The nicknames tend to be unisex, but the legal names USUALLY maintain some definite gender. And - Olive is just as acceptable a nickname for Oliver as it is for Olivia.

Interesting topic. It definitely isn't as common to see girl name turn into boy names but I also wonder if we'll start seeing that as a trend in the future.

Bee blogged about how a lot of boy's names are becoming girl's names:
http://www.hellobee.com/2011/09/22/name-trend-boys-names-for-girls/

There are so many examples... Alex, Andy, Drew... even Charlie. :-) It's definitely a huge trend.

But do you think that there are some male names that won't become female names? Names like, John, Tom, etc.

Or will all traditionally male names over time become unisex?
