I live in the middle of 2 (20ish minutes from each). One is the only mall on Cape Cod so by nature it does well because, especially in winter, there is nowhere affordable to shop. The other one had a huge outdoor mall built very near to it and it has nearly died. The only reason I ever go there now is for the inflatable park inside! Once they lost H&M there was no reason for me to go.

There are 5-6 within an hour of me that are always busy and 2 that are dead. The malls that are dead usually don't have a big department store like Macy's or Nordstrom.

@namaste: I would be there a lot more if I was closer. Then again I would almost never go to Millenia if it wasn't so close! Just braved the BRU/Target out there. I really want buy buy baby to open at WGV! Then I have target, red mango, panera, old navy... Heaven!

Oh yes, I live near the largest mall in Texas. I try not to go too often, though, because it is always super crowded and parking is tough.

I'm from Northern VA so @Pancakes: mentioned a lot of my childhood malls :-) Tyson's was my fave, I was just there while visiting home! Ballston was closest to me but I really only went to the movies there. Landmark was near my high school -- I remember wandering around there with friends after school. Ahhh, feeling nostalgic, haha.

All the big malls are about 20-30 mins drive from us, but we have two brand new smaller, outdoor-style malls both about 10-15 mins away from us (everything is 10-15 mins away because of our tucked-away neighborhood) and they are AWESOME. One has a Target which has greatly improved our quality of life ;)

@Pancakes: I remember Ballston! We were there almost every weekend so my mom could get her hair done. We'd roam the mall while we waited. I remember thinking Landmark was so fancy with its fountains.

@avivoca: you know, I have never even been to Landmark! It's doing very poorly. I think there is a lot of empty retail space that's being rented out for random things. They keep talking about renovating it and making it an outdoor mall, but I'm not sure when/if that will actually happen.

Funny story, when I bought a new baby monitor last year, it was missing a part so I had to call Motorola and when I have the CS rep my address he said, "Oh wow! I used to live near there. Does everyone still hang out at the Ballston mall?"
....I didn't know how to tell him I had no idea that was a "thing."

Haha, where I live now, no. Zero malls in my county, thriving or otherwise. I think there is one about an hour north, and probably one about an hour south too, but I've never been.

Where I went to high school there was an old mall that was known only as "the dead mall" by everyone. It was completely deserted except for the movie theaters. We would go to the movies there but it was creepy!

I love relatively close to King of Prussia, which as others have said, is thriving. One smaller mall seems to be doing great while others have recently closed.

@MOMTOLITTLEB: I think I know what mall you are referring to. :) I spent many weekends there as a teenager 10-15 years ago and it was packed all the time.

So so!

Within 45 min there are a ton. But closest to me there's two that were HUGELY popular in the 90s and early 2000s til they built Providence Place. One is now mediocre and taken over by high schoolers, the other is home to basically Claire's and a cinema. They made it into a strip with Target, Marshall's, etc. Providence Place has had some store closures (Pottery Barn left) but doing well.

The RI Mall is a hot mess. Warwick Mall was recently redone after the serious flooding a few years ago and really nice now!

Also have the outlets nearby which are slamming.

@namaste: I've actually never been to the outlets!!! I end up going to the FL mall and Millenia most based on location and stores but they are annoyingly tourist central. Winter Garden is my fave except for the world's worst traffic patterns of all time.

Yep Mr. Bee, Tysons and Tysons Galleris (Tysons II) are thriving. Lots of restaurants in the Galleria. They added on to Tysons many times and now the Metro stops right there, Fair Oaks in Fairfax is also thriving and quite busy. My husband said theya re remodeling Pentagon City her works near there. I've heard that Montgomery mall in Bethesda is also doing well and has be redone. I used to live in Gaithersburg about five years ago and Lakeforest mall was having issues,

tons! I live in LA and there are just tons of malls. We have a lot of really nice, upscale malls that have stores from H&M on the cheaper end to designer stores like Escada on the higher end and everything in between. The mall within walking distance from my house is always packed.

Yes. I live near King of Prussia mall and it's always thriving, can't imagine it not. I know it well so I'm not intimidated or annoyed by it. It's still usually a big trip so I'm glad my more local mall is doing fairly well. No one would call it upscale but it's not a dump. One mall that was big when I was a kid just closed. It was dying for awhile so I don't think anyone was surprised.

@Pancakes: I went there once or twice as a teen, and the prices were so high that I thought for sure it would go out of business. Guess they knew what they were doing though, because I heard that high-end malls are doing a lot better than the rest of the mall market!

Here in Orlando they mostly seem booming. Here on the west side, there are the big outlets, a MAJOR tourist mall (with Ikea, a huge indoor mall, and lots of strips that are thriving around the mall), and a great outdoor mall.

I used to work for a very well known property management company in the Midwest and their malls were both thriving and failing at the same time in our area. The outdoor ones seem to do really well, even in the cold areas! The ones closing seemed to lose business (and lose tenants or at least higher-quality ones) because of crime and incidents. The mall I worked at was only a few miles from another owned by the same management company, and our mall was 4 times smaller but did 4 times better, mostly because of the high-end stores and shoppers. The other was had less high-end stores, movie theatres and more theft and incidents. There was a mall in a rougher side of town that I believe closed shortly after I left. I have seen that a few of my coworkers have gotten let go so I do wonder if they're struggling and having to cut losses and focus on better investments.

Tyson's 2 is still catering to the bigger labels and getting along fine. I think there may be more restaurants there now too?

Springfield Mall nearly died, but they just finished redoing it into a "town center". It's still a "mall" (in that it's enclosed), but they seem to be marketing it more like the outdoor shopping areas that have been successful in Reston and fairfax, so maybe it's better? I never shopped there until they closed all but the anchor stores because it never really felt safe with all the loitering that went on there.
