The names sound very different. I'd use it. I happen to like siblinv names that are similar or complimentary.

I know a child whose parents started calling her by her first and middle name, "Mary Kate", or "MK" from birth. Now that she's older I notice they just call her Mary, but I still think of her by the long version. You can definitely get people to do it if you stick with it from the beginning.

@missifu: Lost is the first thing I thought of when I read that! It didn't even occur to me that there could be another pronunciation until I read the comments. I think just Lucia is too similar, but (the vast majority of) people will call LO what you/she wants. DH has a cousin named Laura Ray, and she was called that until she got old enough to request that people just call her Laura.

I love both names. Because is a boy and a girl, I don't see it being that big of an issue. Our daughters name starts with "Al", and we love the name "Alice" for our next babe ... But we wouldn't do it, because it's too similar for two girls.

Go with what you love! :)

Love Ana Lucia! Maybe Luisa instead if you're into Spanish names and think Lucia is too similar? I don't think it is if she goes by both. Also I'm biased; have a DD named Luisa!

Thanks for the input! I am terrible at phonetics, but it would be Lucia, like the character Ana Lucia in Lost for those of us that remember that show. So it would be pronounced like the name Lucy, but with an a at the end of it. Does that make sense? The Spanish pronunciation--accent on the i. (Lucía).

I loved Aurelia, but it was way too similar to my first daughter's name in sound. Lucia and Luca are even closer. Isn't it funny how we gravitate towards sounds like the first name that we really liked? Makes you know that you picked correctly the first time around, though!

Like @Pancakes: said, I think it definitely depends on how you pronounce it. In Italian I think it would be pronounced "Loo-chee-ah" because, if I remember correctly, the "i" makes the "c" make the "ch" sound. Which I think is a little too matchy to Luca. I also agree with pancakes if you pronounce it "Loo-sha" like the island, it's also a little matchy. But I don't think "Loo-see-ah" sounds too matchy, with the "s" sound, as opposed to Luca's hard "c".

So I guess my answer depends. How do you pronounce it?

I voted yes - it may be different since they're not the same gender, but I have two nephews (brothers) with VERY similar names and everyone in the family mixes up the names accidentally all the time. We all feel really bad when we do it - it is not uncommon, I do the same thing with my own kids and actually with the dogs too :) But it feels more frequent with the similar names.

I LOVE Ana Lucia. She probably would get called Ana sometimes, but she can decide if she likes that or not eventually, and will refer to herself as she wants to be called. Some impolite people will still give uninvited nicknames unfortunately, ha ha.

We know a couple who just named their baby Lucia. They pronounce it "Loo-sha" instead of "Loo-see-ah." The "Loo-sha pronunciation is definitely too close to Luca for me, but if you pronounce it the other way, I think it's fine, especially as a double name.

I think they're too similar, sorry. But I agree that Ana Lucia is lovely. My BIL is named John Paul and no one calls him John because his parents have always called him John Paul and that's just been the way it is. I think it would be the same with Ana Lucia if you called her that every single time.

Hello everyone!

I have a little boy named Luca and am pregnant with my second and it's a girl. One name DH and I have always liked was Lucia. At first we thought Ana Lucia, but like both names and know that lots of folks may just end up calling her Ana. (not that there is anything wrong with Ana, but we really like the combo). Then DH suggested Lucia. I know it sounds differnt from Luca, but the fact there is only one letter difference is kind of gnawing at me.

So what do you think? Are Luca and Lucia too similar?
