Now that she's older I notice they just call her Mary, but I still think of her by the long version. It didn't even occur to me that there could be another pronunciation until I read the comments. I think just Lucia is too similar, but (the vast majority of) people will call LO what you/she wants. In Italian I think it would be pronounced "Loo-chee-ah" because, if I remember correctly, the "i" makes the "c" make the "ch" sound. Which I think is a little too matchy to Luca. I also agree with pancakes if you pronounce it "Loo-sha" like the island, it's also a little matchy. But I don't think "Loo-see-ah" sounds too matchy, with the "s" sound, as opposed to Luca's hard "c".</p> <p>So I guess my answer depends. We all feel really bad when we do it - it is not uncommon, I do the same thing with my own kids and actually with the dogs too :) But it feels more frequent with the similar names.</p> <p>I LOVE Ana Lucia. She probably would get called Ana sometimes, but she can decide if she likes that or not eventually, and will refer to herself as she wants to be called. One name DH and I have always liked was Lucia. At first we thought Ana Lucia, but like both names and know that lots of folks may just end up calling her Ana. (not that there is anything wrong with Ana, but we really like the combo). Then DH suggested Lucia. I know it sounds differnt from Luca, but the fact there is only one letter difference is kind of gnawing at me.</p> <p>So what do you think? Are Luca and Lucia too similar? </p>
