@BlueWolverine: We are going through the exact same thing with my LOs day care. He takes at least two solid naps (generally 1-2 hours) when he's home with me, but at day care they can barely get an hour out of him total for the day, usually broken up into 20 minute cat naps. And they constantly overfeed him as a result - he drank 10 ounces more yesterday than he did at home Friday, Saturday and Sunday! It drives me nuts. I'm happy to feed him whatever he needs, but they admit that they give him a bottle whenever he gets fussy because he won't sleep. My LO will move to the next room over the summer, where all the kids eat and nap on the same schedule. I'm really hoping that helps!

So good to know that LO is not alone! Yesterday it was two 25 minute naps, but last Friday she had 2 one hour naps. It varies so much. Her teachers always talk about the fact that she's such a chill baby and only fusses when she's hungry. Well, yes, she is a chill baby but she fusses when she's tired as well. I'll keep working with them and hoping for the best!

@BlueWolverine: That sounds so much like my daughter. She wouldn't nap well at all until after she turned a year and went into a different classroom. She wouldn't take longer than a 30 min nap because she was a light sleeper and a very nosy baby (couldn't miss anything!). When she moved to the next room, her naps increased to 1.5 hours, sometimes 2.5, and she would nap in the car on the way home.

Yeah, this is hard. To be fair, his daycare teachers really do all they can to get him to go down and stay down multiple times a day. They don't have infants his age on schedules and instead are great at reading his cues. But he is just such a crappy napper, he's even worse at daycare. At home, at least we have the time to put him down regularly and do all we can to get him to fall asleep, extend his naps, etc. But they have 7 other babies to take care of in his room, so they can only do so much! I'm grateful at least that they don't make him sleep in his crib if he's not feeling it. I've shown up and he's been snoozing in the bouncy seat, or one day he took a one-hour nap ON one of the teachers and she was just like, hey, let's just go with this, instead of trying to put him down.

He gets around 2 hours while he's there, strung together throughout the day. Maybe 3. With 10-11 hours of total sleep at night, he's definitely running a deficit. But what can you do? Like @Edelweiss, I'm just hoping everything gets better with age! Can you share with them what works at home, and what you would like to see him getting while he's there? Ask for their advice to involve them in the process more? It's not really acceptable for them to just be like, oh well, without trying to work with you to get more sleep for this baby!

And I agree with you and others, additional food is not the answer.

ugh, i hear you on lack of naps at daycare. on the weekends, my 4-month LO gets around 6 hours of naps per day (i know, it's a lot). at daycare, we're lucky if he cumulatively gets 2 hours, which usually occur in 20-45 minute increments. i think there's just too much going on, and they only put him in the crib when he's already fallen asleep (this is some policy that is common around here). and if he wakes up from his nap, they pick him up instead of giving him a chance to soothe himself back to sleep, which he usually does at home.

i'm not an expert by any means, but at least for my LO, i doubt that sending more food would help. there's just a lot of noise and distraction at daycare.

i hope, based on what other people wrote, that our babies are able to take better naps as they grow older!

@BlueWolverine: Aww I'm so sorry. I agree it sounds like they need to try harder to get her to sleep.

Agh, daycare naps. This was a huge issue for us. He didn't really start napping well at daycare until he was about 11 months old. I think it helped when he moved to the older infant room and they all nap at the same time.

Our LO always had this problem also. She was (and is) so nosy that she isn't able to fall asleep. Now she sleeps from 12-2, but still takes an hour nap when she gets home, and she is about to be a year old.

I don't know when we will be able to drop the 5-6 nap since she seems to really need it.

Talk with them. Tell them what you are observing and what you need to happen. 50 min naps aren't bad for that age but she should be doing that more often. They should work with you. As for the food I think you are eighth so tell them to try something else before food. Many daycares aren't used to exclusive breastfeeding.

M finally started taking longer naps around 10 months. Now she will sleep for 45 minutes to an hour at a time. She takes 2 naps now. She took 30 minute naps 3x/day for quite some time.

LO does not sleep well at day care. She's 4 mo and yesterday only slept for 50 minutes out of 6.5 hours. At home, she naps every two hours or so. At day care, it's every three or four. Her teachers keep telling me that I need to send more milk but I think that's mostly because when she fusses they feed her instead of trying to put her to sleep. She's been eating a four ounce bottle every two hours (sometimes sooner) for the past two to three weeks. I think she is in a growth spurt, but I also wish they'd try harder to get her to nap. Sigh. She comes home and sleeps for at least an hour in her car seat. I don't even want to take her out - she seems SO tired.

Anyone else deal with this? How did you handle?
