@KT326: This makes me feel somewhat better. It has taken us 8 months to get to the self initiating stage and we still need to remind DS occasionally when it has been a long time. But he has been accident free for over a week now and we are reminding him less and less.

@poppygirl15: It really is a process so hang in there! Sounds like you are marking good progress to me.

@poppygirl15: FWIW, there are times I still have to tell my 7 year old to stop and use the bathroom when it is clear he needs to go (he is king of the potty dance). I think self initiating takes time and maturity. It isn't something that happens right away.

Thanks @autumnleaves @bhbee @crazydoglady: Reading your comments made me feel like "duh, we're definitely making progress." It was just hard to see in the thick of it. We ended yesterday with him telling us he needed to go potty (yay!) so it was worth it to power through the weekend. :)

This sounds like it’s going well! He’s willing to sit on the potty and go. 🙂 You may need to prompt him for weeks or months (hopefully less and less over time).

I agree sounds like it’s going pretty well to be down to 1 accident! I think it’s normal to be asking him to go for now and as he gets it you can space out asking ... likely the feeling/signals will just click and give you more leeway.

I still ask my 4yo if I think he hasn’t been in a while! Hopefully preschool can be good about asking frequently also. Good luck, every kid is different to train but it’s great he’s excited!

@poppygirl15: So, he had 7 accidents yesterday and only 1 today? Sounds like progress to me! We recently potty trained my son (at 3.5) and it started off with us telling him to go potty. Now, he tells us when he has to go and runs to the toilet. Sometimes we ask him when it's been a while. He still has accidents here and there, but it's a process.

My DS is 3 year 1 month. We decided to give potty training a go this weekend because he was actually enthusiastic about the idea (every other time we've suggested it he hasn't been interested) and we had an open three-day weekend. He was also just recently starting to tell us when he peed in his diaper.

Yesterday was super hard. Two "successes" when he happened to go when we put him on the potty. And seven accidents. Sigh. He was discouraged, but elated when he went at the end of the day for one of those two successes. Yesterday, I'd given him more leeway, so today I set a timer for every 5 - 30 minutes, depending how close I thought we were to potty-time. We went all day without an accident, until dinner when I asked him if he needed to go, he said no, and 60 seconds later, as he sipped his drink, he peed.

So, my question is, have we made any progress? Does it count as working towards potty training if he's going if we've sat him on the toilet, but not actually showing any initiative on his own? I'm nervous about preschool next week. We didn't have nearly as hard of a time with my DD, so I'm not sure how to evaluate how "well" we're doing (if at all...) TIA!
