Not class mom, but I'm on the board of directors for the school.
I like being involved and having a higher profile with the staff. I've also made some other mom friends which is a perk.

@nana87: my daughters preschool class has a few, it was whoever signed up. I don't do that but I am on the scholastic book order committee. They do class get together in the beginning of the year and plan teacher gifts and basically anything our room is tasked with by the preschool. They're also putting together a photo share for those who want to participate.

My LO's kinder class has a "room mom." I don't know what she does or how she got the gig, but it would have been nice to be given info before school started.

I was one last year in my sons preschool class. In addition to the standard stuff, we organized Family Friday, where a parent could come in and read a book, do a craft, cook/bake, lead a trail walk.

I am not currently, but have been in the past. For me it wasn't either PITA or fun - - somewhere in between the two I suppose! We didn't have much work to do though. Basically just attend a monthly 1/2 hour meeting at the end of the day to voice any concerns parents raised (I would send out an email a week before the meeting asking for parents to submit any concerns, praise, whatever). I also was in charge of collecting $$ from parents for a holiday gift for our room's teachers (and then buying the teachers their gifts), if parents elected to give $ for a communal gift rather than getting one on their own. So, that part was fun, the rest was meh.

Sounds like they expect more work out of you than was expected out of me!!

Are you a class parent in your child's daycare or school? Is it fun or a pita, lol? Any ideas of things that have or have not worked that you'd like to share?

I just agreed to be the class parent for my daughter's daycare room, and maaaaybe a little in over my head, lol. Aside from serving as a liaison to the teachers/staff for any issues parents may have and organizing thank you gifts, part of the "job" description includes organizing class community events, both with and without kids. I'm trying to think of fun ideas and would LOVE any ideas for events to help foster the class community outside of class! In the past, the only out-of-class events we've had are center-organized potlucks, or birthday parties that individual families obviously plan, and that's been great but they're encouraging class parents to plan more events this year...

Anyway, I'd love to hear about your experiences!
