We want to travel for a number of years, though, so once she's gone we'll take a break from having pets. When we're ready again, it'll be cats all the way. It sounds very entertaining indeed!<br /> We have the space for animals (currently renting our pasture to a farmer to keep cows in), but we don't have any out buildings yet, so no where for them to go. Which in our part of Canada is pretty cold! That's why I was asking about sleeping arrangements.<br /> If we were to get a goat, we might get 1 or 2, and we'd have to have a warm place for him in the winter, which we don't have yet.<br /> Hopefully one day!<br /> Good luck with your farm!!! I feel like they're the best farm animals to have. They're smart, SO personable, and hilarious to watch/interact with. They're basically like our outdoor dogs. They want to hang out with us a lot, and love it when we go out and play with them. They aren't as needy as dogs but otherwise are very similar. We have 3 Nigerian Dwarf goats. They're very short, stout, and come in lots of fun colors. They seem pretty hardy, and they're pretty cheap and easy to feed. We have two does and one buck. The buck is the one in the photo. Both of our does are bred, due in a couple weeks actually! They're enormous right now! We plan to sell the babies, all except for one buckling who we will keep as a companion to our buck. I'm hoping to milk once a day and let the kids stay with them half time, so we don't have to bottle feed and we get some milk. I'd love to learn to make our own goat cheese. Nigerian Dwarfs are supposed to have the highest butterfat content of any breed, so their milk supposedly tastes the most like cows milk and makes the best cheese. I can't wait. Plus, we'll have adorable little goat babies running around! </p> <p>We live in an area with tons of coyotes and a slight chance of mountain lions. Our goats are very small and would make an easy target for either of these. So we usually lock them in the barn at night. At the moment they've been sharing a barn with the chickens, but they're getting too crowded. We're in the process of building a goat barn so they have their own space. We need to get it done in time for the kids! All of that said, one of our does is totally attached to our horse, and she often chooses to spend the night in the pasture with him. She's very hard to catch when she knows you want to lock her in. Our hope is that between the neighbors' livestock guardian dogs that share a fenceline, and the very protective mustang horse she lives with, she'll be safe out there at night. So far so good. When we have kids of course they will all have to be in the barn at night with their moms.</p> <p>Our goats and chickens get along famously. The goats can be a little rough, and they aren't careful, but they never mean harm. Sometimes they almost run the chickens over. They have killed a chick before, but it was tiny and shouldn't have been out with the goats. We separated the chicks after that happened. The full size chickens and even half grown chicks are fast enough to get out of the way. All in all it's a pretty entertaining barnyard we have out there. I enjoy them so much. Plus we have fresh eggs all the time.</p> <p>Sorry for the long post! I love having pets, and I think they can provide both companionship and entertainment for the whole family. My in-laws aren't pet people, so they always comment how animals make houses dirty and are more work than they are worth. This type of mentality makes me feel sad, because I think animals are definitely worth having around, and I hate that they look at them as a nuisance.
