For a few months awhile ago (before our big move), dd wanted me to tell her stories about mermaids all the time. So, I took classic stories and changed the characters to mermaids! The three little mermaids and the big bad octopus, goldimaid and the three little fishes, the princess mermaid and the pea, etc. Good luck!

I found it was hard at first, but once I figured out the formula, he really loved it. I do something similar to what @Autumnmama79 does. I basically start out the same way and let him dictate where we go. And I use a lot of what we did that day or that weekend as a base. Like if we went to the zoo, I can literally tell a similar zoo story every day for a week. Different people go with us each time and we visit different animals in each telling. He like replaying things that were exciting for him.

DD went through a phase where she wanted me to make up stories to tell her at bedtime. I found that if I always included HER as a character in the story, she loved them!

"Once upon a time there was a girl named ________ and every day she went to school. Except one day...."

And then I'd tell a story about some wild adventure that she had and all the other characters/animals she met. Each story had a happy ending as the character always made it home to her mum and dad and lived happily every after

I am apparently rubbish at it! I read stories all day long to my DDs, and I think I'm pretty decent at it, but when it comes to telling stories, I apparently fall apart. I was just reading something earlier today about how important it is to make up stories for kids, so I thought I'd give it a try tonight.... Alas, DD1 cut me off about 2 minutes into my story and asked me to read her normal books instead. I said 'you don't want me to finish my story?' 'No, mummy read George and Martha now please'. Sigh. Actually, it was probably a good thing because I had absolutely no idea where my story was headed :silly:

So tell me, are you a good storyteller or do you prefer sticking to traditional books? I have zero imagination so it's books all the way for me!
