@azjax: yes, and I agree, it is disgusting and wrong. Not to mention no help to me who has to shoulder the entirety of the childcare burden if they are sick while working FT.

@smocks: Is your DH a healthcare professional? And his hospital makes him work sick? That would be really disgusting and totally reprehensible. I hate the anti-paid sick time attitude that so many employers have.

DH gets sick more often and is a bit melodramatic. I prefer to self-quarantine in the case of anything GI-related or if I'm contagious, and do the minimum to get by otherwise.

We both manage. We are all sick right now with colds - like the kind where your head feels huge and stuffy and you can't breathe out your nose and you need tissues every five seconds. But I'm still going to work and he's still doing his work from home stuff. We tough it out.
I only call in for being sick if I'm actually vomiting or have a fever.

I think DH functions better than I do when sick, usually out of necessity. I lounge and just basically make sure no one is hurting themselves, making or ordering in the simplest foods, zero cleaning.

DH on the other hand doesn't really get sick time at work - basically, unless he himself is admitted to the hospital, he's expected to be working (he was literally working all during my labor at the same hospital, and just popping in to see my progress until go-time). He had to treat patients last year when he had severe hand-foot-mouth from our DD, wearing gloves. So gross. He basically self medicates and carries on. If he's got a day off and is sick, I let him do what he needs to do (sleep all day, etc) since his work schedule is much more demanding than mine.

Eh, he can suck it up and function if he has to (like he wouldn't really use a sick day for a cold unless he was seriously seriously ill) and he's not one to run the doctor, but he definitely overmedicates himself and doesn't do anything more than bare essentials when he's sick. He seriously will take like double the dose of a cold medicine or take more than one kind at a time.

To be fair I'm pretty useless when I'm sick, too, if I can get away with it. I'm sure it'll change when the baby comes!

Ugh, we have the typical setup, I function because I have to but DH falls over and goes to bed early if he's really sick. But he legit gets hit by colds harder than I do, it's not an act. I wonder if it's a man thing... it's the same way with the kids, DS usually gets colds worse than DD does.

My husband is completely and utterly useless when he's sick. The upside is that he expects me to be the same and will basically wait on me hand and foot when I'm sick and take care of everything for LO. After 6 or 7 years together I got used to it, and now will take full advantage of his offering to do things when I'm sick!

@gingerbebe: my dh is the opposite- last year he was convinced he had the flu, and we had a newborn. So I was like, you need to go to the doctor and get tamiflu, and he was like, noooo I just need to rest and moan... I had to actually call then he admitted it was just a bad cold.

My husband and I both push ourselves to get things done when we are sick but DH is more apt to take ridiculous actions. He got food poisoning from a burrito and puked a few times overnight and was like I think I need to go to the ER for fluids. I was like I've had MS for 4 months and I drink Gatorade - I think you're fine. Basically he wants to go to the ER or doctor for everything. Maybe it's just my blue collar immigrant background but I'm just a DIY home cure type person.

As long as I don't have a fever, I'm always getting things done. If I'm coughing a lot (like this winter), I'll be a bit slower and might fall asleep earlier but I have a lot of things to do. The DH does not function well when he is sick.

Just got through 16 weeks worth of all day vomiting from morning sickness and still had to function - feed kids, dress them, get oldest to preschool and entertain my youngest while throwing up all the time. And had a stomach bug last week and still had to function because hubby couldn't take time off.
Hubby is moderate - he's happy to take meds but prefers to go nap in peace or lie in front of the tv and prefers to do nothing.

This is well timed because my husband went to bed at 5pm today leaving me to do dinner and bedtime with both kids by myself. In his defence, he had thrown up a few times. On the other hand I spent a day last week stopping myself from throwing up through sheer force of will because I just didn't have time. He also took a 6 hour nap on Christmas Day because he was hungover. I was unimpressed.

This is such a sore spot for me. I keep doing stuff because it has to get done (feed the kids, get them dressed, etc). DH is useless and acts like the world ended. It's really annoying and unfair. And he doesn't even keep his germs to himself. He had a stomach bug on Christmas Eve and was draped across the kitchen table moaning. To make it even better his mom was here over-worrying about him.

I'm a terrible patient. Super cranky and bitchy. In my defense, every time I've been sick over the past few years I haven't been able to take any of the good meds due to being pregnant or breastfeeding. My husband is much better at just medicating and going about his day without too much complaint.

It depends. Mostly yes. I get pretty cranky and miserable to be around. I have also quarantined myself when I've had stomach bugs that I really don't want to expose anyone to. That's not popular with DH when it happens.

DH is typically much more likely to lay around and be miserable, but he won't remove himself from our presence.

I function because I have to. I feel like I don't get a break, whether I'm sick or not. My husband woke up not feeling well this morning (he was laying on the couch when I came down to get ready for work). I brought our daughter to work today and haven't heard from him all day. I guess he's sleeping. He doesn't function well when sick....
