@mediagirl: My friend works as an administrative assistant (so doesn't make a whole lot) and her SO has his own business which isn't doing well at all. Her daughter is 4 yrs old so they're going to start trying sometime next year. They want to time it so that her daughter will be in public school when the 2nd baby is born.

Are you and your SO thinking about having a second? My SO and I are trying for our 2nd but just so worried about how we'll make it work.

@annab53: That's so tough. Is your friend or her SO out of a job? We feel like, even if the economy got better, we would still be in this position!

Then again, if we downsized our house by $50k and moved closer to work (pretty much impossible to do both due to the cost of living near our work) we could probably afford two kids. There's always something. :/

Speaking of saving money, i just had a conversation with a friend who is BADLY wanting another baby but is living paycheck to paycheck. So they have to wait until her daughter is out of daycare. Wish the economy would just get better soon....

@mediagirl: Us, too. I know we'll be able to "make it work" if we had no. 2 but there would be a lot less money worries if we only had 1. But as @AnnaB53 said, it is very sad about wanting to grow your family and worrying about being able to afford it. I like the retirement thread that you just started. :-)

@Andrea: you took the words out of my mouth. This is why we're considering just having one. We are currently saving a lot but once baby #1 comes, I know it will be until they go to public school that we'll be able to save money like we have been again.

I have several mommy friends who really want another child but can't afford it. And it pains me to think that there are loving families out there that are so wanting to grow their families but can't afford to. I know that it will be difficult to save with baby#2 but I hope that we can somehow not dip into the little savings that we do have. On a positive note, once the babies turn into kindergarteners, at least we'll be saving that huge chunk that goes into daycare since they will be in public schools. We're definitely looking forward to that!

We are daycare poor! When I was pregnant I thought my mom was going to watch LO, well it only lasted a few months. It was too much for her to watch him 60 hours a week. So all that money we were saving is going to daycare. It stinks! We are going to have to wait till one of us gets a raise to be able to afford another baby.

Right now we put aside a significant amount of money each month. Once we have the baby, then we'll still be saving, but obviously much, much less each month. If we had 2 babies right now, we would totally be stuck with living month to month and cutting down on our regular expenses. At this point, I'm just hoping that by the time we're ready for baby #2 we'll be making a lot more... or living somewhere less expensive!

Right now we are concentrating on dumping debt but aren't in-debting ourselves more. So onces that's done (hopefully in 1.5 years) then we will put that chunk away for savings.

We still manage to save, even with the loss of my income. I really made an effort to cut out the impulse shopping and we have a budget plan vs. actual spreadsheet that we update every month.

If I had to do it over again, the one thing I would have done is purchase baby gear more intelligently. I would have purchased a stroller that could double, like a Phil and Teds or the Uppa Baby Vista, skipped the infant bucket and gone right to a convertible car seat, etc. We did decide to mostly cloth diaper, so we don't have the huge expense of disposables.

I have lived paycheck to paycheck since before baby #1 was born! I guess because we make it even with having a baby, I could have been saving money. Baby #2 is coming, and I know that we will still live paycheck to paycheck, but I am hoping that with me staying at home, we might be able to put a little aside since we don't have the extra costs of my gas, lunches, etc, and we are trying to do more stuff that saves money, like possibly clothe diapering, etc.

It is a lot tougher. It's almost $24,000/year just for day care alone and I work less than pre-baby so I make less therefore savings is less. I really worry that we won't be able to save any money if we have another baby. I don't know how people afford several kids....I guess that helps explain why so many people, in the US at least, are in debt.

Before we had baby #1, my SO and I were able to save a significant amount of money every month, which allowed us to save enough for a down payment for a house. Now that we have a baby, , it's much tougher to put aside extra money. I guess we didn't realize how much we would need to raise a child (day care, diapers, clothes ,food, etc...). We're trying for #2 now and we're afraid of having to live paycheck to paycheck!

For all of you mommies out there, were you still able to save after your 1st (or more) babies? What has that experience been like for you?
