Both my husband and I are adventurous eaters and cookers. I guess I figure, how do you expect to improve your cooking skills if you don’t try things outside of your comfort zone? I used to always order steak when we ate out at a nice place, because I thought great steak was hard to cook. In reality, steak is like the easiest thing in the world (I just always overcooked it because I didn’t cook it enough to know when it was “done”, until I tried several times and learned).

I love trying new things, DH on the other hand is very picky and very much a meat and potatoes kind of guy. I usually get more adventurous when we are our instead of cooking our own.

@Mrs.Someone: It's very easy. You just put in the brisket and some cut up potatoes and onions. Then top it with chili sauce, brown sugar, a can of beer, and I think that's it!

Yes and no. My husband is usually the more adventurous cooker. He always wants to try making new things. We use recipes as a starting point but never follow. We always alter to our tastes. :)

@artbee - I've never seen a recipe with chili sauce! My family has always done the onion soup mix recipe, but I like trying new things (and don't buy much packaged food).

@Leialou: Yum! If only my husband could eat cheese. And liked broccoli. Man!

@Mrs.Someone: Yum I love love love brisket! But I do the traditional kind with chili sauce. It's in all the old Jewish lady cookbooks, and it's what my grandma and mom made too.

I love to cook (and eat)! Currently my bil is living with me and my husband. My husband works on Saturdays so my bil and I find new recipes and go shopping for new ingredients and then cook dinner together. A couple weeks ago I made some amazing puff pastries stuffed with spinach, broccoli, and cheese.

I'm with @HabesBabe: Hubby does most of the cooking/adventuring, and I get to enjoy his culinary skills. :)

We baked bone marrow recently, and it was delicious!

Yes. I love experimenting. I'm an adjust-until-it-tastes-right person. Sometimes I'll follow a recipe, but more often than not, I'll use a recipe as a base and adjust it based on what I have/what I want the end product to be. I think it's fun that way, but it makes it a pain when someone asks for my recipe because then I have to figure out actual measurements instead of "this looks/tastes right".

@artbee: Yeah, it was pretty tricky. Plus, trying to cook around the turkey. I think I had all the stove burners going. My DH does the dishes since I cook. Yeah, he wasn't too happy about all the dirty dishes I made. I told him that he can cook next time, then. He shut right up.

@bluestriped bee: That's crazy! I've made large meals- cooking for lots of family and friends. I think my biggest was a full Rosh Hashanah (Jewish new year dinner) with chicken soup, brisket and potatoes, noodle kugel, corn pudding, and apple pie for dessert. I made it for my class in grad school, so there were 12 of us there. But I cooked the entire day.

Adventurous? What about making 8 side dishes for Thanksgiving for a family of two and have it all done within 30 minutes of eat time? Does that count?

@BoogieBea: It was yummy, and just enough left over for lunch tomorrow. Love when that happens! I also need a recipe to cook. I can't just add a little of this and a little of that. I used to go to my grandma's once a week so she could teach me to cook, and she never had a recipe. I would sit there and make her tell me how much of everything I could write it down. What did you do with your shrimp? I made roasted lemon garlic shrimps. Love garlic!

I'm not. I usually stay away from seafood because I'm just not used to making it, and most things aren't good for my husband's tummy. But he's good with shrimp, and I love shrimp, so I'm trying it tonight. It's almost done.... but I'm kind of scared to eat it!
