@Foodnerd81: everything for the first 30 days was under my plan. So that included a bunch of pediatrician appointments and jaundice checks. That was all under my plan.

@DillonLion: so your hospital charges and Lo's hospital charges where all covered by your insurance. Then all her ped appts and anything after you left the hospital are under dh's? Is that right?

We are doing the same and I got bills for her hospital stay under mine so I hope it works and I don't have to try an sort something else out. She is covered under Dh now.

We are all on my plan. DH didn't have a job when we first moved to where we live, so we started on my plan. Once he got a job we decided to all stay on my plan b/c it's marginally better than his, and the logistics are easier if we all just have one health insurance company to deal with.

@Pirouette: no retroactive billing. We paid the deductible/out of pocket maximum for my plan which covered me during pregnancy and birth, and her hospital stay. Once she was on his plan, the only charges were those going forward.

We are all under the same plan now, but when LO was born she was added to my husband's insurance and I had my own through my employer. They did try to bill my insurance at first (because they assumed she would be under my insurance), but we quickly called and had her added to my husband's plan and so everything was then just billed/backbilled to his plan.

The only snafu we had was with LO's heart doctor - both my husband and I had Cigna insurance, but different plans and their billing department could not wrap their heads around it and kept charging *my* plan, which kept of course denying the charges. Everyone else had no issue understanding that yes, LO had Cigna - but dad's Cigna, not mom's!

It was a pretty painless process!

@wheres_c: ok that makes sense... thanks! yea i think i have heard you can't add the baby until he/she is born, i'm guessing that's why they have the 30 day grace period.

@lamariniere: sounds like a blast...ugh, i hate insurance! thanks for the heads up though, i'd rather deal with it now than after the fact for sure!

We are all on my plan and we are all on DH's plan. But my insurance is LO's primary because I was born earlier in the year than DH was (we both have United so they go by who's older).

@mrskc: not so sure about the 30 day coverage for newborns. I was told that was how it worked with my insurance and it ended up not being true, so we received a backlog of medical bills for the first month. :-/ @Pirouette: definitely check and double check who needs to be notified and when. Insurance is such a PITA.

@Pirouette: It's ridiculous, isnt it? For mine, She was covered for 30 days under mine, meaning that the bills I got for her for those 30 days were covered under my plan coverage terms. I had to notify my insurance (or you would notify your DH's, probably) within 30 days that I had a change, and had to fill out the forms, etc., and they got her set up.

@Pirouette: Baby was "covered" for 30 days on my plan automatically, but we added him to FI's rather than mine.
we had to provide the new insurance info to everyone we received bills from : obgyn, hospital nurses/docs and.our pediatrician. there was some confusion and a lot of repeating FIs info too them but they retroactively changed their billing and it worked out fine.

with FIs insurance we couldn't add him until he was born and had a name even though the coverage was from birth.

My son is on my DH's insurance. We both have great insurance but it's free for him to be on my DH's where as mine we would have to pay. I'm DH's insurance as well. At the hospital they took both insurance cards, but that's b/c I'm on both. I believe baby is covered on your insurance for like 30 days. I'm not sure how it was handled. the hospital took care of it. At the peds office we let them know that he would be on just my DH's insurance.

It looks like DH will be covering LO, rather than her being on my plan, since his family plan is way better than mine. Just wondering if anyone else has the same setup...was there anything special you had to do at the hospital when you delivered? just give them both of your insurance cards? (I'm not totally clear on what goes under my insurance and what goes under LO's with respect to the hospital stay, but i guess i should start reading up on that!)
