I had a conversation with DH's family about this this past weekend. They basically believe that if you're sick or not feeling well, tea, and lots of it, is basically the only thing that can make you feel better! If Dh has a cold, stomachache, sore throat--he drowns himself in tea. I am generally pretty anti-med--I took tylenol for period cramps, and if I have a really bad headache I'll take something. But that's pretty much it (unless of course I have some sort of infection like strep; in that case, I don't mess around!).

I'm extremely wary of medication, thanks to some family history of med abuse/mental illness. I almost never take them...they just hide the symptoms of a problem anyway! I prefer addressing issues with sleep, water, and healthy foods.

The best way to deal with illness/pain is to PREVENT it.

it depends on what it is. I've learned that the best way to not be miserable through a headache is to head it off from the first sign with a tylenol. I used to tough it out, but with pregnancy, I haven't been sleeping so on the occasion where the headache would prevent it, I'll take it.

@joyjoy: just realized I pretty much had the same view as your post! haha! :)

I'm in the middle. I prefer to get to the root of the problem before just popping some pills, and I'll try to solve my suffering by fixing whatever I think the problem is first. However, if say I have a headache at work and know I need some sleep, I'll take something if the headache is interfering with my ability to do my job since I obviously can't nap at work.

I like to hold off as long as possible to see if it resolves on it's own. If I start feeling too miserable, then I'll take something. I just hate to become too dependent on medication.

Besides antibiotics the only thing I take meds for are cramps. If I don't head them off and take some midol before they get bad then I'm guaranteed a couple hours in the bathroom vomiting from the pain and that is usually followed by a nap to recover my strength!

I hate taking medicine. Especially now, being pregnant. I have a headache/toothache/face ache this morning that is killing me and I just want to suffer through it. I do not want to take Tylenol for it even though it's causing me misery.

I am anti-meds. I'll only take them if I haven't gotten to the root of the problem and am suffering too much. I wasn't always this way--I used to be on prescription meds for my period and my chronic knee pain, but then my brother got sick (kidney failure) and I started researching (I was going to be his donor) and learned about the damage you can do to your organs so I stopped taking those drugs.

I've found natural remedies to help with the pain--although they are not as good as the drugs sometimes!

I take meds, I suffer from really bad seasonal allergies, I take a pill after the first sneeze because I know what happens when I wait too long. I have been a lot more cautious with pregnancy, I will hold out longer for a headache, ect. because I would rather not have meds in my system with the baby. However, if it's bad I will!

@Mrsbells: I definitely agree that the liver can be a weak point! I think my liver is kind of weak, so I'm reluctant to take too many meds as a result.

I suffer for as long as I can. I don't like to mask the symptoms, because I like to troubleshoot the core problem. Maybe I'm getting heartburn because of a specific food allergy, etc.

If the pain or sickness gets really bad though, then I take medication.

I'm anti-meds. I usually suffer through it or find alternative ways to relieve it. I'm just not a fan of pills in general. But I also don't have any big health concerns.
My husband has high cholesterol due to genetics and he's on cholesterol medicine for the rest of his life and he HATES it. But it will potentially save his life so he takes it.

I take meds. I don't see the point in suffering and I trust that my doctor has been through years and years of schooling before mentioning a medicine to me. Are there side effects or risks associated with taking medicines? Sure, but those things are present with everything. There are risks to NOT medicating when you need it too. I don't take a tylenol for every little ache and pain but I'm definitely not afraid to use what's available.

I can't be anti meds. You have to stop a migraine before it starts, or it's just too late and it goes crazy on you. All my doctors always said take your meds the second you feel the pain coming. And they're so right, if I wait too long then I just end up having to take stronger drugs.

That being said, I've been on medication my whole life and I hate it. I'm sure it's affected my body and I do wish I didn't have to. Hopefully after this surgery my medication intake will go down a lot.

My brother has OCD and refuses to take meds, because part of his OCD makes him really freak out about having things like that in his body. Makes me so upset because I know it would help him a lot!

I am pretty quick to take meds, because honestly, most meds work better if you get on top of the symptoms quickly, waiting until things are bad means the meds don't work as well, and I don't see any point is suffering any more than absolutely necessary.

If I have a headache, I take Advil or Tylenol. If I have heartburn or upset stomach, I take Pepto. If I have cramps, I take Advil. If I'm having an allergic reaction, I take Benadryl, etc. Bottom line: if something is wrong and I have something to help, I'll take it. My husband is anti-meds. He thinks one should suffer as long as possible before resorting to medication (luckily for his own life, he did not feel this way when it came to my contractions/epidural). He just thinks that people are too dependent on meds when a nap or rest or a trip to the bathroom will make things better.
