We all grew up in the same state and spent a lot of time together. Now we're scattered around the country but we still try to see each other. I'm even close to what I think are my second cousins once removed because my parents stayed close to their first cousins! I have 6 first cousins. All of them live on the west coast. Growing up I'd only see them during the summer or if we were moving (military family). The cousins families never travelled (and actually still don't for the most part). So once high school ended we never see each other. They are all 9 - 20 years older than I am, and I'm just another kid to them. I did visit uncle and aunt more often when I was in high school, but I just grew closer to cousin's kids. </p> <p>I'm hoping that my kids will be close to their first cousins. Mainly because of age differences and because my dad is closest to one brother and we did lots of things with them growing up - camping trips and other vacations, holidays, lots of random get togethers. I talk to one cousin probably weekly and was a bridesmaid in her wedding! The rest of the cousins on that side I feel like I barely know - enough to be friendly at family events but not enough to maintain contact outside of that. </p> <p>I only have 2 cousins on my mom's side and while I wouldn't call myself close with them we are definitely comfortable around each other and have a great time whenever we do get together. </p> <p>I really want my kids to be close to their cousins but I'm not sure if that'll happen. My older sister is done having kids and her two will be 4 and 2 when my first is born. Hopefully as they get older the age difference won't matter. My younger sister maintains she doesn't want kids any time soon. I haven't seen them since I was a child. They're all at least 10 years older than me, live in another part of the country, and in general lead a really different lifestyle for multiple reasons.</p> <p>We see DH's cousins a lot though - his father comes from a big, close family and there are TONS of cousins our age. I am the youngest and our ages range from mid 50's to 33, and the next generation down (our kids) range from 32 - baby. I am closer with the cousins in the lower end of the age group, and see/speak to them regularly, but I don't see the older cousins as much. I am the oldest of 16 cousins on that side (the youngest ones are 20+ years younger than me so they are more like nieces and nephews).</p> <p>I only know 2 of my first cousins on my dad's side because the rest live in another country and most I have never met. Honestly I don't even know how many there are because my grandfather remarried 3 times and my dad doesn't actually know all his siblings. The 2 that I know are actually the same age as my dad so I am closer to their kids than to them. I am super duper close to one cousin in particular and my siblings each had a cousin that was their special buddy growing up as well.</p> <p>My siblings don't have kids and won't for a long time even though we aren't that far apart in age. I am pregnant with our second and probably last baby, and neither of them plan to have kids for 10+ years. And even back then, they didn't seem that interested in spending time together. The language barrier was probably a big factor - my Japanese isn't very good.</p> <p>My dad's brother has two kids too, and we saw them a few times growing up (whenever my dad visited his brother). But they were way older than us, and the age gap was hard to bridge. Then they moved far away, and we fell out of touch mostly.</p> <p>So overall, I'm not very close to my first cousins. But my kids love my sister's kids to pieces, and they are all reasonably close in age too! So maybe we will break the cycle.</p> <p>Are you close to your first cousins? </p>
