@PrincessBaby: I'm not really a digger either....I hate TJ Maxx / Marshalls etc for that reason. Sometimes its worth it though.. I feel like theres always cute girl clothes on sale.
And I totally know what you mean about your DH. I hate shopping with my SO around. I may or may not have bought a calvin klein pajama with my money yesterday, and left it in the car until he went to work today :)

I have a couple consignment shops near me but they are not nice!
I hit garage sales in nice neighborhoods, I love buying barely used nice clothes for not very much! As for toys I don't mind, but I like to see the house/person they are coming from. Then I take it home, take it completely apart and sanitize the entire thing. I'm talking taking screws and everything apart.

Yep! Only thing I'd pass on is stuffed animals probably. I'm just as wary about cleaning stuff that's new- kids are always slobbering on stuff in the store even if its new!

@wheres_c: I will look into those...My problem is I'm not a "digger.". I'm too impatient, I guess? So large sales like that may not be good forme, lol...I hope you like Will and Emma's...I just remembered the last time we were there they had a couple of pairs of baby True Religion jeans and I totally would have bought them but DH was with me and he's all, "That's ridiculous..". Womp womp!!!! I'll be stopping by there again soon when I go back to work!

@PrincessBaby: Oh cool! I googled after I saw this post and I found a listing for that store. I think I'll try and check it out next tuesday, not that B needs anymore clothes!
There's one by me called consign-a-kid but there wasnt much there. I bought an organic ergo though.
There are some of the huge consignment sales coming up. Lolliposh & Just Between Friends.

I bought some used baby gear like swing, bumbo and we got a lot of hand me down clothes. I just washed all the covers and wiped down everything.

I was talking to a friend of mind and she mentioned something about children's clothing swap... I was very intrigued because i have infant clothing and DD grows way to fast and I need more sleep and plays but buying them on sale for $8 still hurts.

Not really. The only things I ever bought second hand were a bumbo and a swing for my LO, both of which were only used a handful of times and I ended up re-selling them. I'm weird about used things and DH is even worse so we prefer to buy new and will save them for #2.

I haven't bought any second hand toys but I have bought gently used cloth diapers and LO has a lot of hand-me-down clothes that were given to us. So long as the item is in good shape and washable, I think we'd take it if was something we'd use.

Yep! I like to do it in person though. I'm afraid I'll miss a big stain or something if I'm only looking at an eBay photo. There are a few toys I wouldn't buy second-hand because they're hard to clean, like stuffed animals, but everything else is fair game!

I don't have kids yet but I've been stocking up on clothes since before I was married. I have some awesome outfits and feel like I wouldn't need to buy a whole lot when I have a baby. I absolutely love thrifting and in my opinion the dirtier the thrift store, the better. Way less crowded and way more treasures!

@shopaholic: same
there are no consignment shops near me and the thrift stores in my area are really gross or lack selection. Maybe if I traveled to a nicer area the thrift stores would be better but I don't have that kind of time. I am a bargain shopper though and still never pay more than $5-7 per item of clothing for my son.

If it's a big baby gear item like an exersaucer I look on craigslist.

There aren't any good consignment shops near me - I went to one "upscale" one in a neighboring city and was pretty grossed out by much of the selection. But I have gotten a few gems on eBay 2nd-hand and my sister has gotten me some great stuff too!

Toys are a little more iffy. They seem like they'd show a lot more wear and grime? I did get a used Bumbo, but it looks brand new and I Cloroxed the heck out of it!

Constantly. All of her clothing is used, from H&M, Old Navy, or sales at the gap, zulily, etc. The money that people charge for clothing that just gets stained and grown out of, I cannot even believe. Tons of used toys and gear, too. I just found the melissa and doug latch puzzle used for $8. It was like new! I love a great bargain find for myself, too. I find that I find much more interesting and diverse clothing that way.
