Re-bumping as I just finished Episode 3.

Thoughts? @Arden, @Mrs. Sketchbook, @mrbee, @Marfi

**SPOILERS**

My husband used to read the books and said he was surprised by how closely the finale (can you call it that after 3 episodes? more like the depressing end.) followed the books. He was also shocked because as a child he did not realize that the book discussed Sherlock's drug addiction. Very interesting.

I still don't know what I think about Mary.

@Arden: right, exactly! I think it all was fake, but what was the motivation for S to do that? Because W was genuinely freaked out and thought he was about to die only because S pretended he didn't know how to diffuse the bomb and also pretended to not call the cops....it all seemed engineered to make W look like a fool and feel silly. To keep him in line, remind him that he is the sidekick and not the main act. I dunno, it just seemed mean spirited to me I guess!

@Mrs. Sketchbook: I thought the show of emotion in the train was fake? Like, Sherlock was just trying to play up the moment for more dramatic effect?

@Mrs. Sketchbook: I think Sherlock genuinely expected Watson to just laugh and be surprised and happy to see him. He doesn't understand normal human behavior and emotion (as he's demonstrated over and over) so I doubt it ever really occurred to him that he was being insensitive. I loved those scenes, they were hilarious.

@Arden: I agree with everything you said about all the things you liked! I'm glad they never said exactly how he pulled off the fall, but did give us enough info so that we know it was possible.

I think everyone will come down on one side or another with regards to whether or not sherlock is supposed to be lovable or not, and where they draw the line on his behavior. Like you said, the show has such comedic elements. I think of it not as a drama or as a comedy, but more like campy. And in camp, even the villains are redeemable. I don't think sherlock is supposed to be an anti-hero like Don Draper or Walter White, someone you want to see fail. I think of S as a (don't hate me!) smarter Sheldon-- aloof, not sensitive, ego-centric, but essentially good. Like, I don't think he would intentionally hurt someone that he didn't think deserved it. Which I guess is why the train scene surprised me. I was a little surprised at his show of emotion, it didn't seem in character. But tugging Watson around like that for no reason also seemed equally out of character for him. He didn't tell W about his disappearance/fake death because he wanted to protect him I believe, and so then knowingly jerking him around seemed like a departure from that. But the thing at the restaurant, making a splashy entrance and not even thinking there was a possibility that Watson might actually be busy with something else, that seemed totally believable to me and it was very funny.

Ok I'm back to share my thoughts. :)

I loved the humor in the episode. I've always found the show funny but this episode really nailed it for me.

I liked the fake scenarios of Sherlock's "death". I think it was perhaps a nod to all the crazy fans and conspiracists on the webs who have been trying to come up with a solution to the puzzle for over a year now since the last episode aired. I live it when a show pokes fun that way.

I thought the way Sherlock returned and "surprised" John was completely within character and exactly what that type of person would have done. It was a dick move, but that's who he is! Sherlock isn't supposed to be loveable, he's supposed to be fascinating and confusing and infuriating - and he is. Brilliantly.

I LOVE the way they've approached the character of Mary. Instead of feeling like a third wheel/side note or simply a distraction from the bromance (the way the character does in the Robert Downey Jr. movie, for instance) she really adds something to the storyline and I think makes the boys relationship better, if anything. I get the feeling she's going to end up as more than just a Mrs. Hudson type background character. At least I hope so - I want to see her explored and involved.

To be continued... :)

@yoursilverlining: well, I thought he treated her roughly. She helped him out, and then he invites her to go out solving crimes with him and at the end, she's like....why did you ask me to do this? And instead of saying to her, "oh because I needed an assistant," he's like...."yeah, I just asked you because I wanted to thank you for helping me out." Again putting all the focus on himself. And then, in spite of having just been insulted, she spills her guts about the new boyfriend and it was just...hard to watch.

Basically I feel like she's just a gag character. Like at the end with the boyfriend, it was frustrating to me that she doesn't even get to have a boyfriend who is an individual, instead he has to look like Sherlock and be yet another thing that conveys just how into Sherlock she and everyone else in the show is. I think it would have been a lot more delicious if this boyfriend had come in and be really different from Sherlock and Molly is happy. Kinda like Watson's Mary. Instead, she's just a punchline!

@mrbee: ok so I was just reading about Watson on Wikipedia and it seems you've nailed it! From the article:

"In Conan Doyle's early rough plot outlines, Sherlock Holmes' sidekick was named "Ormond Sacker"[2][3] before Conan Doyle finally settled on "John Watson".
In the words of William L. De Andrea,
"Watson also serves the important function of catalyst for Holmes' mental processes... From the writer's point of view, Doyle knew the importance of having someone to whom the detective can make enigmatic remarks, a consciousness that's privy to facts in the case without being in on the conclusions drawn from them until the proper time. Any character who performs these functions in a mystery story has come to be known as a 'Watson'."
In 1929, English crime writer and critic Ronald Knox stated as one of his rules for fledgling writers of detective fiction that,
"The stupid friend of the detective, the Watson, must not conceal from the reader any thoughts which pass through his mind; his intelligence must be slightly, but very slightly, below that of the average reader.""

@Mrs. Sketchbook: Watson is way smarter on this show than he is in the books... but I'm not sure he's smart enough to add value to Sherlock's investigations. But I'll watch the old episodes more carefully to see what he adds to the process!!

House is pretty great at times! I stopped watching the last season or two, but some of the episodes just blew me away. It can be hard to watch at times though, like BB.

@Arden: Hey, that's totally ok! I am an English teacher...I am often the moderator in very serious arguments about things like this! I'd love to hear your thoughts! :) I also love Sherlock. It is doing its part to fill the Breaking Bad shaped hole in my heart (is it pathetic to miss at TV show? If so I am so very pathetic).

@mrbee: I totally agree. Like, why does S want W to forgive him if he doesn't value him personally? Or is it just utility? But like you said, other than being a pretty good shot, W doesn't add all that much to their solving of the crimes. But in the scene with the Jack the Ripper hoax, S clearly missed W's pushback. Molly was agreeing with him all the time and S needed W's skepticism to keep him on his toes. So I think that's the reason he wants him around, but not sure if that counts as affection.

Lol @ sociopath. Speaking of TV sociopaths/Breaking Bad...I think your ability to sympathize/not sympathize with Walter White is a Rorschach test of your personality. Perhaps it is the same with Sherlock...

Lewis is cheesy fluff. I got on it when LO was a newborn and would nap on me. I needed something I could watch back-to-back. Then I got hooked! Never have watched House! Maybe I should do that after DA and S end in a few weeks. It is either that or go back to Mad Men.

@Mrs. Sketchbook: I haven't seen Inspector Lewis... I'll check it out!

And totally agree that Sherlock is a jerk! Or as he put it, a "high-functioning sociopath." It's amazing that he's as likable as he is! On that note, I loooved that Watson punched him out a few times in the beginning!! Serves him right...

I think Sherlock knew all along that there was an off switch, and just wanted Watson to forgive him. It's tough when two people are at such vastly different levels of intelligence... I thought the House/Wilson friendship (modeled on Sherlock/Watson) did a good job of showing how a friendship could work despite such vast differences.

What I don't really get is why Sherlock needs Watson... is it because Watson blogs his cases and made him famous? He needs a sounding board? I have never really understood that part...

@mrbee: I read some of the originals when I was a youngster and haven't re-read; I wish I could add to what you are saying about Irene, but I do think I remember that so I will agree with you there!

I was really disappointed in how S "tricked" W on the train at the end of the episode. I am not sure....did he always know how to turn off the bomb, or did he just figure it out right then? S looked honestly upset when W was so scared, and I thought it was a rare moment of honesty on the part of S. But then S figured out how to fix the bomb, and said it was all a big joke. Can't tell if he really meant the whole thing as a joke (which makes him a royal jerk), or if he was just trying to recover from a very rare moment of vulnerability. I know that Holmes is supposed to be a jerk, but that just strained my ability to like him. If W had given him more pushback in that moment perhaps I would feel better about it.

I did appreciate that they gave Mycroft his dues in this episode, giving him credit for being up there intellectually with his brother. I don't know if I give him credit for saving S in the beginning of the episode because I wasn't sure if Sherlock being there was planned by them, since M knew about S's plans to dismantle Moriarity's network.

Mr. Bee, do you watch Inspector Lewis? I love that show (it is so cheesy I will admit), and so maybe I prefer inoffensive underdog Lewis instead of aggressive Sherlock. Like Molly says, maybe Lewis is just more my type...!

@Mrs. Sketchbook: You're totally right that their relationship is different - I hadn't picked up on that! In the books, Irene was one of the few people who outwitted him (and the only woman). I felt like in the show, she had the upper hand on Sherlock for most of the episode. But yah, Sherlock did save her at the end. Their relationship felt like one of equals sparring, whereas in the books I think she outright beat him.

Sherlock's not totally invincible though... he was being beaten pretty badly at the opening of the premiere, and Mycroft had to save him!

@mrbee: I dunno..."I am Sherlocked"?

...she seemed pretty whipped to me!

PUN TOTALLY INTENDED!

I guess I see Sherlock as Irene's mental equal, but I dunno if the show portrays her that way....she is totally into him and he uses that weakness to expose her. Once he has established that he is smarter than her, only then does take a shine to her. Plus the last we see of her, he's once again swooping in saving her from some foolhardy scheme. It weirds me out...like, she's just as smart as Sherlock, but her emotions get in the way. Kinda plays into some stereotypes about women vs. men!

Actually, I like Mary. She seems smart and nice and likes Sherlock without feeling like she has to compete with him (at least so far, haven't seen the wedding episode) or get him to like her in order to validate herself.

@Mrs. Sketchbook: I thought Irene was a pretty strong female character! Although she's a dominatrix, so not sure how that scores on the dignity scale!!

I finally saw the first episode last night. I was really entertained by it....but today was sweeping and thinking about it and some of it really annoyed me. I feel like Sherlock has become too invincible. I don't mind if he always wins, or whatever, but so far he hasn't even faced a worthy opponent. All of the opponents in this iteration are madly in love with him--Irene and Moriarty for example just falling all over to get a piece of him. I am ready for someone who actually poses a challenge. I feel like the villains are always trying to bait Sherlock, instead of just doing bad stuff and Sherlock is assigned to catch them. It makes Sherlock the focus of the story instead of the mystery itself.

Also I think Watson is just a pitiful character. The way Sherlock yanked him around in this episode at the end was really annoying. He is like a pathetic puppy dog. In some ways I actually like the Guy Ritchie version better because at least Watson has a little backbone.

I also was so embarrassed by the Molly character that I had to look away a few times. That character has so little dignity (frankly, none of the women on that show have any dignity) that it was painful to watch!

ok, end rant! I still found it highly entertaining!
