Yes, everyone on the block has kids and we're always outside. Plus there's a basketball hoop in the street in front of our house. I don't even know who it belongs to. My 2 year old is obsessed with the kids. I feel bad because we don't have a lot of toys and we spend a lot of time at the neighbors houses.

I'm friendly with our neighbors, we help each other out, if needed but I don't hang out with them or playdates or anything. Not that I wouldn't but any free time I do have I want to hang out with my friends, family and DH.

We have a neighborhood full of young families, but because we don't have kids yet - we haven't really hung out with anyone.

I always remember the key to making friends is proximity; repeated unplanned interactions; and a setting that encourages people to let their guard down and confide in each other. The more opportunities you can find to have these three things happen, the more likely you will become friends.

We are friendly with them and if we happen to be outside at the same time we will play. But other than that...no. The house right next to us has a girl pretty close to DD's age but her parents are so helicopter-y I don't really like to hang out with them much because their parenting style drives me crazy.

Yes, but not formal get togethers. The kids will play together if we are all outside at the same time, but we don't plan activities.

Our neighborhood is predominately older, retired people, so we made friends with the one house with a kid as fast as possible. Our husbands mountain bike together, the wife & I go shopping, we have the boys play after daycare most days, and we try to do stuff on the weekends but we get busy & it's hard to schedule. She is pregnant & due about 3 months ahead of me, so it's been really fun. We're just hoping they don't move any time soon!

@Rainbow Sprinkles: The kids across the street from us are the same way. We were out talking to a neighbor, and they came out to walk their dog, and the other neighbor was like, "Catch me if I faint...I've never seen this before in the 5 years they've lived here!" They are a little older (like 9-13 range), but they really are never outside!

Our development is in transition right now, so immediately surrounding us, there's just the family across the street that never comes outside and two houses up from us, there are two little boys that LO is in between age wise. We hang out with them quite a bit, especially when the weather is nice. If we're home, we'll see them at least once/day, and DS loves playing with them!

Otherwise, we have original owners who have been there for 25+ years who are just starting to think about downsizing.

Not really. I am friends with the mom down the street who has a 6 month old, 3 year old and 6 year old. Other than that, there aren't many people on our street that come outside so we don't really know them. One house across the street has a 3 year old but they are never outside so it's hard to talk to someone when you never see them!

I'm really surprised people stay inside so much. We have a playground right by our house yet it is used by middle school kids as a hang out much more than by parents with kids who would want to play on it. :(

there are a couple of families that we have gotten to know with a kid around the same age. there is also another family down the street, but for whatever reason we haven't become friendly with them.

3 out of the 16 other houses on our street have kids near the same age as our LO and we play with 2 of the families occasionally, but the other family is not very friendly.

DH and I make a big effort to get to know all of our neighbors. We organize an annual pot-luck block party, take food to new neighbors or ones that have been sick, and most importantly -we spend time outside all the time, so we chit chat when we see them walking the dog or checking the mail. I've found that most people want to get to know their neighbors and have that type of community, but don't really put the effort into extending putting themselves out there and making the connections.

Yes, and it makes us SO glad we moved! The next-door neighbors have 2 girls and the people behind us have 2 kids, and the 2 youngest girls (10yo) love to come over and play with D! Our next-door neighbors hung their baby swing back up on their swingset and let us come over and use it whenever we want. They also just gave us a little backyard play castle/slide and a bike. Their kids have outgrown them, so they just gave them to us.

Not yet... Our direct neighbors have 3 boys all older than DD but close enough that I assume they'll eventually play together but now DD is too young. The neighbor on the other side of them also has a toddler, younger than DD so I figure once they get older and can actually play together they will. As for now we say "hi" in passing but that's it.

We used to be very close with our next door neighbors. It was wonderful. Then I found out the mom had done some pretty crazy, wrong things and that ended that. Now we don't hang out anymore. It's sad, but we are not interested in having that around our family.

None of our immediate neighbors have young children, but we definitely know other kids in the neighborhood since a lot of them attend our preschool. We have playdates or meet them at the playground after school.

No one in our building has young children. I think the people upstairs may have tweenagers, but they might be their grandkids. I rarely see them. In our previous 2 apartments we have been friendly and had playdates with neighbors with kids.

None of our neighbors have kids younger than 10 which is kind of a bummer. We really want a family with young kids to move close!! But we're friendly with the neighbors we do have, just not super close, except for an older couple across the street - we talk often and have had them over a few times. Unfortunately, their grand kids never visit!

the house across the street from us has two girls, 4 years old and 20 months. They seem to keep to themselves (it blows my mind how much time they just spend inside, and the mom never leaves), but we probably play with them once or twice a month.

The house right next store is an older retired couple with grandchildren, and they have a 9 year old granddaughter who LOVES my girls. She just walks right in our house and spends hours hanging out. We love the grandparents, too, so we let our 3 year old go over there and play whenever the grandkids are visiting.

the only neighbours around who have kids the same age as mine are directly across the road. they're recent migrants and I don't think they speak much english, but they always say hello/wave. the kids range from maybe 3-9, and they are friendly too (talk to us about our cat/come to sell chocolates for fundraisers). my other neighbours have obnoxious teenagers!

We have at least three houses on our block with kids the exact same age as LO. But we've never really gotten together to hang out. Both spouses in each house work full time and just don't seem to want to put the effort in on the weekends to meet each other.

I always think we should bake some cookies and go (finally) get to know one another, but we don't get around to it.

On the other hand, there are some other houses and those people are out all the time hanging out in the street, but we're not crazy about their personalities. Ha! Plus, their kids are a bit older.
