I want to be just as strict as my parents because I feel like it worked out really well for me. Although I'll probably be MORE strict with my sons that my parents were with my brother. They let him do a lot more than me because he was a pretty big guy even as a kid so they figured he could take care of himself. I think that freedom might've gone to his head a little, so I want to try to avoid that with my children. In general, I think I will be more strict and he will be less strict. His Dad was in the military and ruled their house with an iron fist. I had curfews, but they were on point with my friend's. I'm going to be huge on open communication and honesty. That is what helped my mom and I survive my later high school years. She may not have agreed with my decisions, but she always knew where I was and what time I would be home, and that I would not be drinking/driving. Strict, but I turned out great with no arrests or serious f-ups. DH's parents didn't really parent and both of them got in trouble with the law as teenagers, and his sister is now in her 20s and out of control. Not just spoiled brat, but serious issues. So, we both have agreed to err on the side of more strict like my parent did with my brother and I. And I never hated my parents growing up because they were consistently strict since before I could remember. I guess it worked? I've never smoked or done any drugs and I didn't try alcohol until I was 20. I did however have pre-marital sex at 17 (it was with DH) and my mom flipped out, and still does to this day. I might be the same amount of strict, but maybe handle certain situations differently.
