Definitely not as a baby or a young child, but possibly when LO is an upper grader (so 8ish years from now?). I can't stand it when I see little kids with iPads, iPhones/smart phones, etc.

I don't have an iPad and plan on keeping my little kids away from screens as much as possible. They can experience that stuff in school, along with smart boards, computer training, and etextbooks.

Yup. I think it will be a very helpful educational tool... but not until the child is school age.

Something for older kids like multiplication tables for sure, but when they are little I don't want them on an iPad. Like Andrea said, I want to limit screen time, plus I refuse to be one of those parents bemoaning the fact that their LO broke the iPad.

@yin: Yah we don't allow games either. I'm referring more to educational apps that teach multiplication tables and algebra, for older kids...

I think it will eventually replace traditional textbooks, though it may take some time.

Btw, I'm on est the next few days, it's feels so different!

I think DD is still too young for it at 2. I don't want her staring at a screen any more than necessary. But if it can help an older child with something like multiplication tables, that sounds great!

It's so popular to download games for babies and toddlers on the iPad/iPhone, but I have decided against it. I let my LO watch Sesame Street on the Netflix app, but we don't have any specific apps for him. While I know it can be an educational tool, I will wait until he is older. Same goes with playing video games and such.

I was a bit skeptical, but I am increasingly convinced that iPad apps are going to have a huge impact on education.

My first realization was when I was tutoring a friend's kid on multiplication tables. I went to Amazon to buy some multiplication flashcards, and while I was researching the best ones I found out that there were tons of iPad apps to teach the multiplication tables. I downloaded one and my friend's teenager got really into it... she kept trying to beat her speed record (measured in 1/10th of a second).

Then I saw this article about how someone created a game that teaches algebra and is hugely popular:
http://www.wired.com/geekdad/2012/06/dragonbox/all/

I'm definitely amazed at the power of iPad apps to impact education. I plan to supplement our kids education with lots of apps!
