But, something would need to have gone horrible wrong us not to follow our plant to move in ~3 years - job loss, house losing significant value, etc.</p> <p>I can't imagine us being in our townhouse indeterminately, so ultimately I'm pretty sure we'll move to a good district and our kids will go to public school. I went to public school all my life except for pre-school/kindergarten, and I think it's fine. DH grew up in the city of Boston and had to go to magnet/charter/private schools and I don't think he got as good an education as I did. I went to a local public that wasn't all that great and then got a "scholarship" of sorts to go to a very good private school. I'm glad I got both experiences. DH lived in a small town and just went to local schools his entire early schooling. </p> <p>Non-Catholic independent private schools are REALLY expensive here in NYC, if you cannot get financial aid. DH has suggested Catholic schools, but I'm not sure if I am completely comfortable with that since we are not Catholic (I know lots of people who weren't Catholic and went to Catholic schools, so I know it's done). When I hit college, they contributed nada. We have a large state university in our city and through it there is an educational research school that is K-12 and has amazing resources. It's a lottery system for admission, based on the current demographics of the state but it's considered public (free) and isn't a magnet for any particular subject.</p> <p>DH and I went to the same middle school (a public k-12 gifted magnet) and had an amazing experience. I left in HS to go to the big public option closer to home while he stayed and though it was a really good school I do have times when I wish I stayed back at the non-traditional option. I think the only ones that aren't covered are boarding schools (and they only have a couple). But those are notoriously known for hazing and are generally considered for only the uber wealthy. DD would go to the public school by our house, it's next to a nature path, and it looks pretty big for a small town school. I'm looking forward to walking her each day.</p> <p>If we moved to SD, I would be very picky about what school district she'd go to (where we'd move).
